Winner of the 2008 Caldecott Medal, The Invention of Hugo Cabret by author and illustrator Brian Selznick, is a unique combination of novel and picture book – the first of its kind to win this award. Intended for older elementary and middle school children, this 2007 work follows Hugo, an orphan that lives undercover in the walls of a Paris train station. Hugo maintains the clocks of the station and keeps safe a broken automation from his father, but his life takes a sudden turn after meeting a young girl. The Invention of Hugo Cabret won numerous awards and was also a finalist for the 2007 National Books Awards in Young People’s Literature.
