The defence of Guenevere, and other poems
William Morris , 1892
One of 300 copies printed, this exquisite book bound in vellum is an exemplary example of Arts & Crafts design. A great bear of a man with an unruly head of hair and flowing beard, William Morris, the 19th century artist, author, poet, socialist, and designer, approached all his work with an eye to the human endeavor. He lamented the often-shoddy work of the Industrial Age and sought to re-instill a sense of aesthetics and dedication in the creative crafts. In this volume issued from his Kelmscott Press, one can see in the typeface, the book’s design, and its illustrations and fine paper all the sensibilities Morris insisted upon in his work. His influence in the 20th and 21st centuries is still felt by those seeking to design, in his words, the “ideal book.”
