The University of Cincinnati Libraries and IT@UC Research & Development announce the next in the Data & Computational Science Series (DCS2) 2018, a speaker series supported by a Universal Provider award from UC’s Office of the Provost for faculty development.
DCS2 brings to the University of Cincinnati research community a variety of innovative workshops and distinguished speakers on advanced research data topics including high performance computing, cloud computing, data visualization, research story-mapping, spatial analysis, artificial intelligence and machine learning. The workshops are free and open to all, but registration is required.

NSF’s Jetstream Cloud is an Infrastructure-as-a-Service platform comprised of two geographically isolated clusters, each supporting hundreds of virtual machines and data volumes. The two cloud systems are integrated via a user-friendly web application that provides a user interface for common cloud computing operations, authentication to XSEDE via Globus, and an expressive set of web service APIs. Jetstream enables on-demand access to interactive, user-configurable computing and analysis capability. It also seeks to democratize access to cloud capabilities and promote sharable, reproducible research. The two cloud systems are integrated via a user-friendly web application that provides a user interface for common cloud computing operations, authentication to XSEDE via Globus, and an expressive set of service APIs. Jetstream enables on-demand access to interactive, user-configurable computing and analysis capability as well as persistent science gateway functionality. It also seeks to democratize access to cloud capabilities and promote sharable, reproducible research.
This session will describe Jetstream in greater detail, as well as how its unique combination of hardware, software, and user engagement support scientific research and also provide hands-on training for the majority of the time using the Jetstream OpenStack API for basic gateway construction.
Length: 3 hours (30-40 min introduction, the rest hands on)

Description:
The Jupyter Notebook is an open source web application where you can create and share live code, equations, visualizations and text. It has many data science applications such as data cleaning, data visualization and more. This workshop will introduce this tool and then demonstrate how to use the notebook environment to work with data using the programming language python. Workshop attendees will create data visualizations in python for a deeper understanding and better ability to communicate research results.
Experience: A basic understanding of python is needed for this workshop.
Requirements: BYOD – Attendees need to bring their own laptops or tablets for hands-on participation, and our presenter will be available afterward for consultations.

In this workshop, participants will:
- Sign-up for access to ArcGIS Online
- Explore the Story Maps gallery and learn more about the wide range of web app templates available
- Build a Story Map to illustrate an example of their use in communicating research topics
