Sebastian Karcher to Present as Part of UC Libraries and IT@UC Data and Computational Science Series

sebastian karcherUC Libraries and IT@UC Research & Development and are pleased to announce the Data & Computational Science Series (DCS2) 2018, a speaker series supported by a Universal Provider award from UC’s Office of the Provost for faculty development.

The next speaker in the series is Sebastian Karcher, associate director of the Qualitative Data Repository at Syracuse University. He will give a talk on Annotation for Transparent Inquiry and conduct a workshop on Web scraping using R to build a qualitative dataset on Tuesday, July 24, in the Walter C. Langsam Library room 480 from 11 a.m.-noon and room 475 from 1-3 p.m. The workshop will be followed by a coffee hour from 3-4 p.m.

Annotation for Transparent Inquiry (ATI): Making Qualitative Publications Transparent
Standard models for transparency in qualitative research — providing code and data to produce figures and tables — map poorly onto qualitative research and writing practices, where evidence is interspersed throughout the text. The Qualitative Data Repository (QDR), in partnership with the software nonprofit Hypothesis, has developed Annotation for Transparent Inquiry (sample screenshot below) to allow authors to create a digital overlay over articles, annotating key passages and linking them to data sources deposited in a repository. The presentation describes some of the ideas behind ATI, takes a closer look at its technical underpinnings, and presents initial results from a study accompanying the generation of recently published pilot projects.

An Introduction to Screen scraping using R
This hands-on workshop provides users the basic tools for automatically scraping webpage content using the rvest R package. It includes a brief introduction to CSS/xpath and the structure of websites and then will teach participants to write a script to collect structured information from multiple pages on a website.

Requirements: No prior experience required.  Note: this workshop will cover a lot of material, so participants need to be fearless in writing some code.
Software requirements: R, R Studio and the rvest package installed (You can bring your own device or use the classroom desktops)
