Augsburg printer and publisher, Andreas Maschenbaur, acquired the original woodcut blocks of Vesalius' De humani corporis fabrica (Fabrica), to use 19 of them in this edition of 1706. After publication of the second edition of the Fabrica in 1555, the whereabouts of these woodcut blocks remained unknown until Maschenbauer used them in the work presented here. Maschenbauer’s publication of the Vesalius prints was intended for painters. During World War II, the original woodcut blocks of the Fabrica were destroyed in an allied bombing raid of Munich making this edition an extremely rare and valued work.
