The Collection<\/h2>\n

\"Barbour,<\/a>The George B. Barbour collection at the University of Cincinnati\u00a0consists of\u00a0documents\u00a0pertaining to the personal and professional\u00a0aspects of the\u00a0geologist and\u00a0educator’s life.<\/p>\n

His personal papers contain diaries kept during his service in World War I, as well as correspondence (1890-1975)\u00a0between him and his wife, Dorothy (Dickenson) Barbour, his\u00a0parents, children, and friends.\u00a0Of the various correspondence, a portion\u00a0were\u00a0labeled\u00a0“VIP” to\u00a0distinguish their importance.\u00a0Such “VIP” correspondence\u00a0include\u00a020th century figures as James Truslow Adams, Norman Angell, John Dewey, Albert Einstein, Jane Goodell, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Herbert Hoover, Theodore\u00a0Roosevelt, Margaret Sanger, and George Bernard Shaw.\u00a0\u00a0Along with the\u00a0correspondence, the collection includes newspaper clippings\u00a0regarding the activities of the Barbour\u00a0family as well as\u00a0photographs and film of the family captured during their various travels.<\/p>\n

Barbour’s professional papers contain a great deal of information regarding 20th century Geology curricula, development of the Geological profession, and some information regarding major geological and anthropological discoveries made during the 20th century. Included are reprints of professional articles, early diaries, field notebooks, lecture notebooks, grade books, teaching materials, professional association materials, research notes, and working papers for Barbour’s book, “In the Field with Teilhard de Chardin.”<\/p>\n

As a result\u00a0of the\u00a0long-term friendship between George Barbour and Teilhard de Chardin, and\u00a0a general interest the\u00a0Barbour family shared\u00a0in\u00a0de Chardin’s life and work, the collection also includes\u00a0correspondence between Barbour and de Chardin, bibliographies of de\u00a0Chardin’s works,\u00a0articles and books\u00a0by and about de\u00a0Chardin, and his personal copy of The\u00a0South African Journal<\/em> from 1951.<\/p>\n

The George B. Barbour papers reflect a gifted scholar extremely dedicated to his profession as a geologist and teacher, and a man devoted to and beloved by his family and friends.<\/p>\n
