Hall Jacobite Collection in the Archives &amp; Rare Books Library is a watercolor of the \u201cBeheading of the Rebel Lords on Great Tower Hill.\u201d \u00a0Unfortunately, the image is not one-of-a-kind. \u00a0It is an incredible work, though. \u00a0Depicted in this scene is an endless crowd surrounding a scaffold. \u00a0On the platform, one man has his head down on the chopping block as an ax is raised over his neck. \u00a0This execution took place in 1746 after the Jacobite Rising in 1745.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/jacobite-beheading.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30563\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/jacobite-beheading.jpg?zoom=1.5&amp;resize=565%2C391\" alt=\"Jacobite Beheading\" width=\"555\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><span id=\"more-30562\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The rebellion was started by Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) in his attempt to steal back the English throne. \u00a0Those executed were loyal followers who not only aided him in his attempts to overthrow the government, but were his seconds in command.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the image, three sections of text are seen. \u00a0The author of each is unknown. \u00a0In the first section, there is a poem which reads, \u201cAt this sad Scene which Blood must deeply stain;\/Scarce can the pitying Eye the Tear restrain:\/But the same Instant call to mental Sight,\/Those Heroes bleeding in their Country\u2019s right;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The middle text is a description of the scene, which reads:<\/p>\n<p>The Kings Troops under the Command of the Valiant Duke of Cumberland; having totally defeated thee. \u00a0Rebels at Culloden, on the 16 of April 1746. \u00a0Kill\u2019d 2009 in the Field of Battle. \u00a01500 in the pursuit &amp; took 500 Prisoners; among which was the Earl of Kilmarnock &amp; a few days after the Ld. Balmarino; the Earl of Cromartie was taken the day before at the Battle of Golspye by the Ld. Rae; &amp; were brought to the Tower May 29. The Grand Jury found a true bill against them 23 June, &amp; and they were brought July 29, to Westminster Hall where the Ld. High Steward and the Peers being seated the bill of indictment was ready, the Lds. Kilmarnock &amp; Cromartie pleaded guilty, Balmarino pleaded not guilty. On the 30<sup>th<\/sup> they were brought again to the Bar; when Kilmarnock and Cromartie made speech to dispose the Lords to intercede for mercy, Balmarino having mov\u2019d in arrest of Judgment, the High Steward assign\u2019d him Council; but on August 1, he withdrew his plea, &amp; they all receiv\u2019d sentence of death. \u00a0Kilmarnock and Balarmino were executed the 18 of August.<\/p>\n<p>The Earl of Kilmarnock refers to William Boyd. Balmarino refers to Arthur Elphinstone. \u00a0The Earl of Cromartie refers to George Mackenzie. \u00a0He avoided death allegedly because his wife was greatly pregnant at the time. \u00a0However, he lived a sad life with little freedom, and less wealth.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the third set of text reads, \u201cIntrepid Gard\u2019ner and each brave Monro,\/We check the Grief, &amp; think the Axe too slow.\/One Briton, who for sacred Freedom falls,\/For a whole Hecatomb of Rebels calls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The image was printed for Robert Wilkinson, who we assume to be the artist as well. \u00a0Wilkinson\u2019s primary job was as a cartographer. \u00a0There isn\u2019t much evidence of other artworks he may have created.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll have much more to say about the Virginius Hall gift over the next several weeks and months as the volumes are catalogued and we learn more this donation of more than 500 books and develop a dedicated web presence for them.\u00a0 For more information about it, email the Archives &amp; Rare Books Library at <a href=\"mailto:archives@ucmail.uc.edu\">archives@ucmail.uc.edu<\/a> or call us at 513.556.1959<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By:\u00a0 Sydney Vollmer Among the items recently received from the Virginius C.
