{"id":44,"date":"2017-10-27T13:24:38","date_gmt":"2017-10-27T13:24:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/exhibits\/tolzmann-ga\/?page_id=44"},"modified":"2017-11-30T18:00:04","modified_gmt":"2017-11-30T18:00:04","slug":"dr-tolzmann-biography","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/exhibits\/tolzmann-ga\/dr-tolzmann-biography\/","title":{"rendered":"Don Heinrich Tolzmann"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-45 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/exhibits\/tolzmann-ga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2017\/10\/pasted-image-0.png\" alt=\"Don Heinrich Tolzmann\" width=\"100\" height=\"123\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A scholar of German history, Don Heinrich Tolzmann has accumulated this collection throughout his career. \u00a0 Tolzmann is the retired Director of the German-American Studies program at the University of Cincinnati and is the former Curator of the German-Americana Collection at the University of Cincinnati Libraries.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tolzmann received his MA from the University of Kentucky and his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati.\u00a0 He began his career at the University of Cincinnati as a librarian and German bibliographer and he was instrumental in bringing together the German-American collection in the Archives and Rare Books Library as a separate special collection.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tolzmann served as President of the Society for German-American Studies from 1981 to 2006. \u00a0During his tenure of office, he called for the 1983 German-American Tricentennial to mark the establishment of the first German-American settlement at Germantown, Pennsylvania and led the 1987 campaign to establish October 6th as German-American Day. He has been called the \u201cFather of German-American Day\u201d in recognition of this latter achievement. \u00a0He also organized the first German-American Heritage Month in Cincinnati in 1989. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has received numerous awards, including the Federal Service Cross from Germany, the Ohioana Book Award for history, and the SGAS Outstanding Achievement Award from the Society for German-American Studies. \u00a0A prolific author, he has written, edited, translated or composed 370 works in 605 publications, in both German and English. \u00a0Some of his recent works include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engelhardt Riemenschneider: \u00a0Memoirs of a German Methodist Pioneer<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">German Heritage Guide to the State of Ohio.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has also served on the boards of international and national organizations, including the Deutsches Auswandererhaus in Bremerhaven and the Friends of the German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C. \u00a0He is currently president of the German-American Citizens League of Greater Cincinnati, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2011, he has served as the Executive Director of German Heritage Tours, which provides guided tours of historically German areas in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. \u00a0He is also the editor of the book series <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New German-American Studies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is serving on the editorial board of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yearbook of German-American Studies, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and other publication. \u00a0He is currently the Book Review Editor of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">German Life<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a Columnist and Associate Publisher for Germerica.net. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A scholar of German history, Don Heinrich Tolzmann has accumulated this collection throughout his career. \u00a0 Tolzmann is the retired Director of the German-American Studies program at the University of Cincinnati and is the former Curator of the German-Americana Collection at the University of Cincinnati Libraries.\u00a0 Tolzmann received his MA from the University of Kentucky&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-44","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/exhibits\/tolzmann-ga\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/44","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/exhibits\/tolzmann-ga\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/exhibits\/tolzmann-ga\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/exhibits\/tolzmann-ga\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/22"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/exhibits\/tolzmann-ga\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=44"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/exhibits\/tolzmann-ga\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/44\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":188,"href":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/exhibits\/tolzmann-ga\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/44\/revisions\/188"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/exhibits\/tolzmann-ga\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=44"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
