UC Libraries Pay Tribute to UC Authors, Editors and Composers

Exhibit of Published Works on Display in Langsam Library’s 4th and 5th Floors through June 10, 2012

The annual Authors, Editors and Composers reception and program was held Tuesday, April 17, in the Russell C. Myers Alumni Center. At the event, UC Libraries honored 285 faculty members and their 413 creative and scholarly works published in the year 2011. Participating faculty members represented every UC college plus the Division of Professional Practice, and the Libraries.

The submitted publications ranged in medium as well as content. There were articles, books, chapters, edited journals, musical scores, artwork, poetry, works of fiction, CDs, DVDs, photography and even an iPod app. There were publications that enlighten and inform, some that inspire and motivate, and others that entertain. While some presented answers to life’s probing questions, others examined the past and explored the future. The publications spanned five languages: English, Spanish, German, Greek, Japanese, and French.

At the event, three UC faculty discussed their published works as part of the program:

  • John K. Alexander, UC professor of history – Alexander shared insights into his book, Samuel Adams: The Life of an American Revolutionary. The book sheds new light on the beliefs of America’s founding fathers through the insights and revelations of Samuel Adams.
  • Mary Curran-Hackett, adjunct instructor of English – Curran-Hacket discussed and read excerpts from her book, Proof of Heaven. The novel blends a mother’s faith, a child’s bravery and a doctor’s search for healing in a story about family, faith and love.
  • Charles R. Doarn, research professor, Family and Community Medicine – Doarn discussed some of his published articles, including “The International Space Station – The First Leg of a Human Mission to Mars” and “Medical Policy Development for Human Spaceflight at NASA: An Evolution,” as well as the journal he co-edits, Telemedicine and e-Health.

The event also featured remarks from Kristi Nelson, senior vice provost for academic planning, and Victoria A. Montavon, dean and university librarian.

Most of the published works from Authors, Editors and Composers are now on public display in Langsam Library’s fourth and fifth floor lobbies through June 10.

“Authors, Editors & Composers” is organized by the University of Cincinnati Libraries and sponsored by Donors to the Libraries Annual Fund. Contributions from this group assist the Libraries in many ways, including providing support for exhibits that draw attention to library collections.
