Join Us October 11 for “Genre Genius in Cincinnati: From SciFi to Hybrid Forms”

books by the banksIn partnership with the Books by the Banks festival, the College of Arts and Sciences and UC Libraries are co-hosting a group of panel sessions on Tuesday, October 11 on the fourth floor of Langsam Library from 2-5 p.m. “Genre Genius in Cincinnati: From SciFi to Hybrid Forms” will focus on science fiction and fantasy, comics and graphic novels, and the mixed mastery of hybrid forms. Attendees are invited to come to listen, learn, and share, and to stay for a casual writers’ lounge celebrating Cincinnati creatives and their community. The panels are free and open to all. The three panels are:

  • 2-2:50 pm ~ Sci Fi/Fantasy and Horror
    MODERATOR: Don Peteroy, author of Wally and past winner of the Playboy College Fiction Award
    PANELISTS:
    Charles Jones, co-editor of Afrofuturism 2.0
    and Chair of UC’s Africana Studies Department;
    Laura Resnick, science fiction author.
  • 3-3:50 pm ~ Comics/Graphic Novel
    MODERATOR: Jeff Suess, Cincinnati history writer and leader of the Mercantile Library’s graphic novel group
    PANELISTS:
    Carol Tyler, author of  the Job Thing, Late Bloomer and most recently the award-winning Soldier’s Heart, and adjunct professor in the School of Art at DAAP;
    Jennifer Glaser, associate professor, Department of English and Comparative Literature;
    Daniel Dale, graduate student, Department of English and Comparative Literature.
  • 4-4:50 pm  ~ Hybrid Forms
    MODERATOR: Lisa Ampleman, accomplished poet and former associate editor of the Cincinnati Review
    PANELISTS:
    Rebecca Lindenberg, author of Love, An Index;
    Kristen Iversen, creative writing professor;
    Michael Hennessey, Department of English and Comparative Literature.

 

“Genre Genius in Cincinnati: From SciFi to Hybrid Forms” is one of 10 events planned to commemorate the 10th annual Books by the Banks: Cincinnati Regional Book Festival scheduled for 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, October 15, at Duke Energy Convention Center, 525 Elm St., Cincinnati, OH 45202.

The book festival is expected to draw more than 100 authors from across the country, including local favorites and nationally bestselling writers. The author lineup includes Mary Kay Carson, Bob Shea, Marisa Silver, Jim Obergefell, UC authors Chris Bachelder and Leah Stewart, and many, many more.
