Jenny Doctor

Jenny Doctor

UC Libraries is pleased to welcome Jenny Doctor as the new Head of the Albino Gorno Memorial Music (CCM) Library. With the agreement of the College-Conservatory of Music, she is also appointed with the academic title of associate professor of musicology.

Doctor comes to UC Libraries from Syracuse University where she had a joint appointment as the director of the Belfer Audio Archive with Syracuse University Libraries and associate professor in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications since 2012. Prior to that she was a reader in music at the University of York in the UK, and has also served as director of the Britten-Pears Library, a specialist music research library with close links to the British Library.

Doctor holds a Master of Music in music history and a PhD in musicology from Northwestern University. She has a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and music from Oberlin College and a Bachelor of music in piano performance from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

Along with her experience in special libraries and archives, Doctor brings extensive teaching experience to UC, and she has always incorporated exploration of music and archival collections in her teaching as well as in her research and publications. Her role as Belfer director was formulated as part of an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant, and an essential component of that project was to find ways, not only to preserve and improve access to over half a million sound recordings, but also to promote their use in teaching and research. Doctor has authored multiple books exploring relationships between music and media, and contributed to many others. She recently co-edited “Watching Jazz: Encountering Jazz Performance on Film and Television” with Bjorn Heile and Peter Elsdon, which was published by Oxford University Press in 2016. The prestigious Philip Brett Award from the American Musicological Society was awarded to “Music and Sexuality in Britten: Selected Essays, ed. George Haggerty (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2006), to which Jenny contributed the ‘Afterword’.

We look forward to Jenny’s vision and leadership and a deeper partnership between the College-Conservatory of Music and the CCM Library in the future. Please join us in welcoming Jenny to UC Libraries.
