To celebrate this milestone, an exhibit highlighting the life and publishing career of Harriet Beecher Stowe is on display on Langsam Library&#8217;s 5th floor. A timeline noting important events in Harriet Beecher Stowe&#8217;s life is displayed along with samples of some of her writing.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Harriet Elisabeth Beecher was born June 14, 1811 in Litchfield, Connecticut. She moved to Cincinnati with her family in 1832 and published her first book, <em>Primary Geography for Children, <\/em>in 1833. Three year later she married educator Calvin Ellis Stowe who encouraged her writing career. In 1851 she would publish\u00a0one of the best known novels in American history, <em>Uncle Tom&#8217;s Cabin<\/em>, which made her famous world wide. Harriet Beecher Stowe was a prolific writer and went on to publish over 30 books including <em>Dred, A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp<\/em>, <em>The Minister&#8217;s Wooing<\/em>, and <em>Palmetto Leaves<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Timeline:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>June 14, 1811<br \/>\nHarriet Elizabeth Beecher is born in Litchfield, Connecticut<\/p>\n<p>1832<br \/>\nHarriet moves to Cincinnati with her family and lives in a house in Walnut Hills<\/p>\n<p>1834<br \/>\nPublishes \u201cThe Prize Tale\u201d in <em>Western Monthly Magazine<\/em>, her first piece sold to a commercial outlet<\/p>\n<p>1836<br \/>\nMarries Calvin Ellis Stowe<\/p>\n<p>1845<br \/>\nPublishes a sketch called \u201cImmediate Emancipation,\u00a0A Sketch\u201d in the <em>New York Evangelist<\/em>. This story, which she said was based on an actual incident in Cincinnati, was a precursor to <em>Uncle Tom\u2019s Cabin<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>1851<br \/>\n<em>Uncle Tom\u2019s Cabin<\/em> first published as a newspaper serial in <em>National Era<\/em><\/p>\n<p>1853<br \/>\nPublishes <em>The Key to Uncle Tom\u2019s Cabin<\/em> in which Stowe identifies her real-life sources for the novel\u2019s characters<\/p>\n<p>1856<br \/>\nPublishes her second novel, <em>Dred, a Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp<\/em>, which tells the story of an escaped slave<\/p>\n<p>1859<br \/>\nPublishes the novel <em>The Minister\u2019s Wooing<\/em>, a satiric take on Calvinism that also deals with her grief over the loss of her son who accidentally drowned at age 19<\/p>\n<p>1869<br \/>\nStowe and her sister, Catharine Beecher, publish <em>The American Woman\u2019s Home<\/em> a manual arguing for the respect and recognition of woman\u2019s domestic work<\/p>\n<p>July 1, 1896<br \/>\nHarriet Beecher Stowe dies in her sleep at her home in Hartford, Connecticut<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit was curated by Lorna Newman, head of Interlibrary Services and Government Documents, and designed by Melissa Cox Norris, director of Library Communications.
