{"id":15622,"date":"2012-06-04T15:30:40","date_gmt":"2012-06-04T19:30:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/?p=15622"},"modified":"2012-06-04T15:30:40","modified_gmt":"2012-06-04T19:30:40","slug":"falling-asleep-reading-in-the-archives-and-rare-books-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/2012\/06\/falling-asleep-reading-in-the-archives-and-rare-books-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Falling Asleep Reading in The Archives and Rare Books Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By:\u00a0 Lauren Fink, ARB Intern, 2011-2012<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Falling asleep reading is common problem that can result from a number of factors.\u00a0 Firstly, reading typically involves the photoreception of dark text against a light background, or vice versa, which can tire out the muscles of the eye due to their repeated adjustment to contrast.\u00a0 Secondly, reading may become habitual with falling asleep, i.e. if you always read before bed you will associate reading with time to fall asleep.\u00a0 The following are some important considerations when trying to read and comprehend effectively:<a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/eye.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-15689\" style=\"margin: 6px\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/eye.jpg\" alt=\"Eye Drawing\" width=\"210\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/eye.jpg 852w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/eye-84x155.jpg 84w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make a habit of reading during a time of day when you are most awake.<\/li>\n<li>Do not read in the sun<\/li>\n<li>Avoid bare light bulbs<\/li>\n<li>Avoid light windows<\/li>\n<li>Avoid glare on your book page<\/li>\n<li>Reduce screen glare<\/li>\n<li>Reduce contrast in your room and on computer screen<\/li>\n<li>Avoid hypnotism from highlighting<\/li>\n<li>Improve sitting posture<\/li>\n<li>Get up and move around.\u00a0 In general, take breaks about every 45 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Stay hydrated; take water breaks (dehydration makes you tired).
