A jaded opinion, you say?\u00a0 Maybe, I respond, but certainly one that is backed by the boisterous heritage of American city life. \u00a0And, so in the spirit of Archives Month in Ohio and the democratic system of government, here we go\u2026<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18480\" style=\"width: 255px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/mullen-detective-agency_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18480\" class=\"wp-image-18480  \" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/mullen-detective-agency_2.jpg\" alt=\"Mullen Detective Agency\" width=\"245\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/mullen-detective-agency_2.jpg 567w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/mullen-detective-agency_2-116x155.jpg 116w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/mullen-detective-agency_2-142x190.jpg 142w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mullen Detective Agency<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cPolitics are said to be inborn in an Irishman, but at this time, in Cincinnati, he had not shown in any distressing degree this aptitude.\u201d This sentiment, expressed in 1870, was changed by Mike Mullen, the quintessential ward healer.\u00a0 As the Eighth Ward\u00a0captain, he controlled dozens of patronage jobs, all of which went from Democrat\u00a0to Republican when he bolted to the machine politics of George B. Cox.\u00a0 The son of Irish immigrants, Mullen was beloved in his ethnic community, helping his constituents through bad times and holding a massive \u201cIrish Day\u201d picnic every year.
