The University of Cincinnati Libraries have completed a\u00a0 three-year project to digitize the correspondence and photographs of Albert B. Sabin,\u00a0 developer of the oral polio vaccine and distinguished service professor at the University of Cincinnati\u2019s\u00a0College of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Research Foundation from 1939-1969.<\/p>\n
The collection is freely and publicly available via the Albert\u00a0 B. Sabin website at http:\/\/sabin.uc.edu\/<\/a> and\u00a0includes approximately 35,000\u00a0letters and accompanying documents totaling 50,000 pages of correspondence\u00a0between Sabin and political, cultural, social, and scientific leaders around\u00a0the world. Also included are nearly 1,000 photographs documenting the events\u00a0and activities worldwide that were part of Sabin\u2019s crusade to eradicate polio.<\/p>\n “This is what every biographer dreams of \u2013 so easy to\u00a0use and complete,\u201d said Charlotte Jacobs, MD, emerita professor of medicine at\u00a0Stanford University and an accomplished biographer.<\/p>\n The project, funded by a grant from the\u00a0National Endowment for the Humanities, is a “We the People” initiative designed\u00a0to encourage and strengthen the teaching, study, and understanding of American\u00a0history and culture through the support of projects that explore significant\u00a0events and themes in our nation’s history and culture and that advance knowledge of the principles that define America.<\/p>\n The Sabin digitized correspondence and photographs are of\u00a0great relevance to the research efforts of historians, social and political\u00a0scientists, ethicists, biomedical researchers, and physicians, as well as\u00a0students and scholars worldwide. Marguerite Rose Jimenez, a postdoctoral fellow\u00a0at American University researching Sabin and his polio eradication efforts in\u00a0the Americas, commented, \u201c[T]he\u00a0archives just keep getting better and better! The search functions and\u00a0 thoroughness of the searches generated is really amazing and so incredibly\u00a0helpful! I’ve found all sorts of things using key search terms that I never\u00a0 would have found searching through the documents as hard copies.\u201d<\/p>\n In addition to providing easy access to the 50,000 pages of digitized correspondence and photos,\u00a0the Albert B. Sabin website<\/a> includes a biography and\u00a0timeline of Sabin\u2019s life and career, a section about the vaccination program\u00a0referred to as \u201cSabin Sundays,\u201d and information about the complete Sabin\u00a0Collection, which encompasses 400\u00a0linear feet and consists of correspondence, laboratory notebooks, manuscripts, photographs,\u00a0audio and video recordings, and other\u00a0research papers generated by Sabin during his long and active medical\u00a0career from 1930-1993. Also included on the website are lessons plans<\/a> created to encourage high school teachers to use the Sabin digital collection in\u00a0their classrooms.<\/p>\n For more on the Hauck Center for the Albert B. The correspondence and photographs are part of the Hauck\u00a0Center for the Albert B. Sabin Archives. Sabin\u2019s wife, Heloisa, donated his papers,\u00a0medals, and other artifacts to the University of Cincinnati upon his death in\u00a0 1993. They reside in the Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health\u00a0 Professions<\/a> where they have been organized and preserved with the support of\u00a0the John Hauck Foundation.<\/p>\n
