The Campus and Reaction Against War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Hallway-protesters-2_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2333\" style=\"margin: 8px\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Hallway-protesters-2_web.jpg\" alt=\"Hallway-protesters-2_web\" width=\"154\" height=\"162\" \/><\/a>In May 1970 the University of Cincinnati closed its doors to students and canceled classes.\u00a0 Campus demonstrations over the escalating Vietnam War and the invasion of Cambodia, the deaths of protesters at Kent State University and Jackson State University, and discontent with the administration\u2019s efforts in enfranchising African American students led to the occupation of Van Wormer Hall and Beecher Hall.\u00a0 UC came to a standstill as students, faculty, staff, and administrators grappled with the issues of world turmoil being faced at the university.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/70-Homecoming-final_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2305\" style=\"margin: 8px\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/70-Homecoming-final_web.jpg\" alt=\"70-Homecoming-final_web\" width=\"187\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a>The events of 1970 represented the cultural and political upheaval of the era, but they also symbolized something much deeper than that: <a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Protest-rally-against-invasion-of-Laos_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2342\" style=\"margin: 8px\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Protest-rally-against-invasion-of-Laos_web.jpg\" alt=\"Protest-rally-against-invasion-of-Laos_web\" width=\"173\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>students at any period in history question the status quo.\u00a0 They question authority, they question policies and values and ethics and accepted truths.\u00a0 After all, isn\u2019t that what a university is about, to question and to seek answers?\u00a0 To intellectually explore and to socially experiment?\u00a0 A college education is at once a fear of the unknown and the exhilaration of discovery.\u00a0\u00a0 And, these aspects of education are most visibly evident in the reaction of <a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Phil-Ochs-and-Jerry-Rubin_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2316\" style=\"margin: 8px\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Phil-Ochs-and-Jerry-Rubin_web.jpg\" alt=\"Phil-Ochs-and-Jerry-Rubin_web\" width=\"146\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a>students to the world problems they face.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Draft-Attorney-Stephen-Butter_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2343\" style=\"margin: 8px\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Draft-Attorney-Stephen-Butter_web.jpg\" alt=\"Draft-Attorney-Stephen-Butter_web\" width=\"140\" height=\"220\" \/><\/a>Posters have been distributed on campus throughout the years calling for student action regarding war.\u00a0 In the University Archives, these handbills and fliers are an important documentation of university life because they are ephemeral &#8211; often tacked, stapled, and nailed outside in the weather, disappearing shortly after the event they promote.
