{"id":2711,"date":"2010-05-12T13:49:16","date_gmt":"2010-05-12T17:49:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/?p=2711"},"modified":"2010-05-12T13:49:16","modified_gmt":"2010-05-12T17:49:16","slug":"an-unexpected-view-of-blegen-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/2010\/05\/an-unexpected-view-of-blegen-library\/","title":{"rendered":"An Unexpected View of Blegen Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_2735\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Breaking_ground_at_ceremony_web_72.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2735\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2735\" style=\"margin: 8px\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/blegen_construction_web_small.jpg\" alt=\"An Unexpected View of Blegen Library\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2735\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click to view larger image<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Two years ago when CCM Librarian Mark Palkovic worked with a UC architecture seminar on historic preservation on projects that created designs for an academic music library, there was an unexpected bonus for the University Archives.\u00a0 The students\u2019 projects centered on using the abandoned University YMCA building at the south end of campus to imagine its adaptive reuse as a library and performance space.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Located along Calhoun Street just before the intersection with Clifton Avenue, the YMCA structure was built in 1929 at a cost of $175,000.\u00a0 For decades it served as the place for lectures, recreation, celebrations, various classes, and, a regular Madrigal dinner.\u00a0 However, in the past twenty years as more recreation and meeting facilities were constructed on campus, the building was closed.<\/p>\n<p>During the research phase, Palkovic discovered a number of photographs left behind in the YMCA, which he conveyed to the University Archives.\u00a0 The photos weren\u2019t examined in great detail until a DAAP graduate student began a new research project on the building.\u00a0 One of the images he consulted is the one shown here \u2013 and in the background, one can see the skeletal structure of Blegen Library rising from the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Completed and opened in 1930 as UC\u2019s Main Library (and the second library structure erected on campus, after Van Wormer), the building was rededicated as Carl Blegen Library in 1983.\u00a0 It is one of the hidden Art Deco treasures of Cincinnati, with beautiful architectural elements dedicated to the history of the book and the heritage of learning.\u00a0 And now, in this new (to us) view of Blegen, we can add to our store of images of a library building that currently houses the Archives &amp; Rare Books Library, the John Miller Burnam Classics Library, the Albino Gorno Memorial Music Library, and the Department of Classics.<\/p>\n<p>For a PowerPoint presentation on the history of Blegen Library, click on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.libraries.uc.edu\/libraries\/arb\/archives\/exhibits2\/blegennew\/BLEGEN~1_files\/frame.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.libraries.uc.edu\/libraries\/arb\/archives\/exhibits2\/blegennew\/BLEGEN~1_files\/frame.htm<\/a><\/span>.
