I received them and gave them as gifts. Some of them were magical and still call up pleasant memories. I wondered if my co-workers at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucclermont.edu\/library.html\" target=\"_blank\">Clermont College Library<\/a> had the same experience. So I asked them to tell me about a favorite holiday story from their childhood related to a special memory or moment. Here\u2019s what they shared:<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28746 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/the-snowman-136x190.jpg\" alt=\"the-snowman\" width=\"136\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/the-snowman-136x190.jpg 136w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/the-snowman-111x155.jpg 111w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/the-snowman.jpg 330w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 136px) 100vw, 136px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>I have great childhood memories of the wordless picture book, The Snowman (1978) by Raymond Briggs.\u00a0 Before I could read, I loved looking through the pages of this book and imagining words to match the beautiful illustrations.\u00a0 The short film, also wordless, is lovely and features some unique accompanying music, too. \u2013Katie<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On Christmas Eve, the four of us had our ritual. In the afternoon, we <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28747 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/night-before-Christmas-155x190.jpg\" alt=\"night before Christmas\" width=\"155\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/night-before-Christmas-155x190.jpg 155w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/night-before-Christmas-126x155.jpg 126w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/night-before-Christmas.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 155px) 100vw, 155px\" \/>would make lots of cookies, then have a light supper, and hunt for a Christmas tree (That was before the parents&#8217; famous artificial trees of pink and silver, including the color wheel!).<\/p>\n<p>Then we would head home, have cookies and milk or hot chocolate, leaving some for Santa of course! \u00a0Dad would read the &#8220;The Night Before Christmas.&#8221; My brother and I would try so hard to see Santa, but we never saw him&#8211;we always fell asleep! \u2013Kathi<a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/night-before-Christmas.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Visit-from-Saint-Nick.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28748 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Visit-from-Saint-Nick-225x190.jpg\" alt=\"Visit from Saint Nick\" width=\"225\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Visit-from-Saint-Nick-225x190.jpg 225w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Visit-from-Saint-Nick-155x131.jpg 155w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>When I was old enough, Mom and Dad encouraged me to read aloud \u201cA Visit from St. Nicholas\u201d from Favorite Poems Old and New (1957) along with the story of Jesus\u2019 birth every year on Christmas day. To this day I read Clement C. Moore\u2019s poem every holiday season. The poem instilled in me an interest in the life of the real Saint Nicholas and his generous spirit of giving. I still own this dear old book to which I attribute my love of poetry. -Penny<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My favorite holiday book is <em>Debbie\u2019s Dream<\/em> by Belgian artists Gilbert Delahaye and Marcel Marlier. (1983)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne winter, Debbie finds herself bedridden with a cold. She has a dream of dancing with a snowman, who invites her to go to the land of the winter king. <a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Debbies-Dream.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28749 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Debbies-Dream-136x190.jpg\" alt=\"Debbie's Dream\" width=\"136\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Debbies-Dream-136x190.jpg 136w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Debbies-Dream-111x155.jpg 111w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Debbies-Dream.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 136px) 100vw, 136px\" \/><\/a>She is understandably upset when she wakes up and finds that there is no palace of ice or trees of silver, but is comforted by her Grandpa&#8217;s words &#8220;dreams sometimes come true &#8211; but not always in the way we expect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I have fond memories of my grandmother taking me monthly to Erlanger K-Mart to get the next installment of the Debbie series until I had the complete set. She said that she bought them for me because Debbie was a brunette like me.
