{"id":30437,"date":"2016-06-13T14:06:59","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T18:06:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/?p=30437"},"modified":"2016-06-13T14:11:15","modified_gmt":"2016-06-13T18:11:15","slug":"joe-should-respect-the-throne-in-scotland-pa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/2016\/06\/joe-should-respect-the-throne-in-scotland-pa\/","title":{"rendered":"Joe Should Respect the Throne in Scotland, PA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Sydney Vollmer, ARB Intern<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Do you remember when I thought there were a lot of film adaptations of <em>Hamlet<\/em>? \u00a0Well, it turns out that number is nothing compared to the number of films made on <em>Macbeth<\/em>. \u00a0The adaptations started as early as 1916 and are still running strong. \u00a0Over the past 100 years, more than 15 film adaptations have been created. \u00a0That number doesn\u2019t even include the amount of television shows based on the play, episodes with <em>Macbeth <\/em>as their title, or all of the times the play has been filmed for television. (See full list below.)\u00a0 Many of these films are direct adaptations, but a few are creative twists on the traditional story. \u00a0These twists include: <em>Joe MacBeth<\/em> (1955), <em>Throne of Blood<\/em> (1957), <em>Men of Respect<\/em> (1990), and <em>Scotland, PA<\/em> (2001).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Joe_MacBeth_film_poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-30438\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Joe_MacBeth_film_poster.jpg\" alt=\"Joe MacBeth film poster\" width=\"200\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Joe_MacBeth_film_poster.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Joe_MacBeth_film_poster-101x155.jpg 101w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Joe_MacBeth_film_poster-124x190.jpg 124w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Joe MacBeth<br \/>\n<\/em>1955<br \/>\n1h 30m<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this adaptation, we no longer are traipsing through dark castles in Scotland, but ducking through the alleyways as Lily MacBeth urges her husband to take down the top mob boss. \u00a0Starring in this movie is Paul Douglas as \u201cJoe MacBeth\u201d and Ruth Roman as \u201cLily MacBeth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Throne-of-Blood.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-30439\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Throne-of-Blood.jpg\" alt=\"Throne of Blood\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Throne-of-Blood.jpg 350w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Throne-of-Blood-103x155.jpg 103w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Throne-of-Blood-127x190.jpg 127w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Throne of Blood<br \/>\n<\/em>1957<br \/>\n1h 50m<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Highly regarded Japanese film, <em>Throne of Blood<\/em>, takes warrior Taketoti Washizu on the same journey of power and corruption that befell Macbeth. \u00a0Taking place in Japan, the characters are slightly different. \u00a0Instead of the Weird Sisters, there is a single seer who tells Washizu that he will one day be the Great Lord of the Spider\u2019s Web Castle. \u00a0It might be a tragedy, but based on that description, I can see it appealing to a lot of little kids. \u00a0Maybe they\u2019ll water it down and turn it into an anime\u2026if they haven\u2019t already.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Men-of-Respect.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-30440\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Men-of-Respect.jpg\" alt=\"Men of Respect\" width=\"200\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Men-of-Respect.jpg 350w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Men-of-Respect-106x155.jpg 106w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Men-of-Respect-130x190.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Men of Respect<br \/>\n<\/em>1990<br \/>\n1h 53m<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Basically a revamped <em>Joe MacBeth<\/em>, <em>Men of Respect<\/em> features a hostile mob takeover. \u00a0This time, the Macbeth character, \u201cMike Battaglia,\u201d is played by John Turturro.
