Hall on the Jacobites. \u00a0Not having any idea who they were, I looked them up. \u00a0The internet gave me the gist of information I would need to know, so between that and our collection I have been able to piece some things together\u2014until today.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/The_Scornful_Lady_Beaumont_Fletcher.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-30568\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/The_Scornful_Lady_Beaumont_Fletcher.jpg\" alt=\"The Scornful Lady Title Page\" width=\"250\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/The_Scornful_Lady_Beaumont_Fletcher.jpg 626w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/The_Scornful_Lady_Beaumont_Fletcher-103x155.jpg 103w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/The_Scornful_Lady_Beaumont_Fletcher-126x190.jpg 126w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a>From the last blog you will note that the Jacobite uprising took place in 1745, with the beheadings in 1746. \u00a0Yesterday, Kevin handed me some papers with basic research on Jacobean theatre with the request that I look for some works in our collection done by common playwrights of the time. \u00a0Simple enough, but I started reading this stuff, and they were lumping Shakespeare in with these guys. \u00a0Now, it\u2019s not that you need to keep up with my life, but I\u2019m in charge of promoting our Shakespeare collection.\u00a0 Even if I wasn\u2019t, it would be pretty hard for me to ignore that he died 400 years ago\u2014in 1616. But if the Jacobite uprising didn\u2019t happen until 1745, why was Jacobean theatre listed as being from the period between 1567 and 1625? \u00a0Maybe, I was remembering the dates of the Jacobite rebellion wrong\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/wild_goose_chase_combined.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30569\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/wild_goose_chase_combined.jpg\" alt=\"Wild Goose Chase Title Page and Drawing\" width=\"500\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/wild_goose_chase_combined.jpg 590w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/wild_goose_chase_combined-155x121.jpg 155w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/wild_goose_chase_combined-244x190.jpg 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But I wasn\u2019t. \u00a0I had no choice but to look into the matter. \u00a0Whereas this may be common knowledge to some of you, it wasn\u2019t to me. \u00a0It turns out that the Jacobean Era and the Jacobites are two different things. \u00a0The Jacobean Era (the <a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Beaumont_Fletcher_Works.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-30570\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Beaumont_Fletcher_Works.jpg\" alt=\"The Works of Beaumont and Fletcher\" width=\"250\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Beaumont_Fletcher_Works.jpg 496w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Beaumont_Fletcher_Works-92x155.jpg 92w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Beaumont_Fletcher_Works-112x190.jpg 112w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a>time the plays were produced) refers to the time during the reign of James VI of Scotland\/I of England. \u00a0Jacobites come later, as Bonnie Prince Charlie attempts to reclaim the throne. \u00a0Now, the question you\u2019re all wondering and probably why you\u2019re reading this in the first place: Did I find Jacobean plays?\u00a0 &#8230;Yes and no.<\/p>\n<p>The famous playwrights of the time were (in no particular order): Shakespeare, John Marsten, Ben Jonson, Francis Beaumont, Thomas Heywood, John Ford, Thomas Dekker, Cyril Tourneur, Thomas Middleton, Thomas Nashe, George Chapman, and John Fletcher. \u00a0Our holdings include works from many of these famous names, but not necessarily works printed in the timeframe in which they were conceived. \u00a0Most of these plays have been republished with some form of commentary, or new editing. \u00a0Fortunately, there are some that are <a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Ben_Jonson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-30571\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Ben_Jonson.jpg\" alt=\"Ben Jonson\" width=\"250\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Ben_Jonson.jpg 422w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Ben_Jonson-102x155.jpg 102w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Ben_Jonson-125x190.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a>from the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century. \u00a0Most proudly, we present a book of the compiled works of Ben Jonson. \u00a0A large volume, this book contains an elaborate title page, as well as a portrait of Jonson himself.<\/p>\n<p>The pictures shown are just a small representation of our collection. \u00a0If you find yourself wanting to come in to learn about the Jacobean Era, or the Jacobites, we have plenty for you. \u00a0Give us a call at 513.556.1959, find us on the web at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libraries.uc.edu\/arb.html\">http:\/\/www.libraries.uc.edu\/arb.html<\/a>,\u00a0 \u00a0or email us at <a href=\"mailto:archives@ucmail.uc.edu\">archives@ucmail.uc.edu<\/a>. \u00a0We are open Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm. \u00a0Don\u2019t forget to check us out on Facebook \u00a0at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ArchivesRareBooksLibraryUniversityOfCincinnati\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ArchivesRareBooksLibraryUniversityOfCincinnati<\/a> and follow us on Twitter @ARBLibrary. \u00a0\u00a0And just so you know, forthcoming is a webpage for the Virginius C.
