{"id":34601,"date":"2018-01-23T16:46:29","date_gmt":"2018-01-23T20:46:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/?p=34601"},"modified":"2018-01-23T16:48:57","modified_gmt":"2018-01-23T20:48:57","slug":"university-area-planning-in-the-gettler-papers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/2018\/01\/university-area-planning-in-the-gettler-papers\/","title":{"rendered":"University-Area Planning in the Gettler Papers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By: Alex Temple, Gettler Project Archivist, Archives &amp; Rare Books Library<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/MLK001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-34631\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/MLK001.jpg\" alt=\"Martin Luther King Jr. and Vine Street Intersection\" width=\"400\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/MLK001.jpg 972w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/MLK001-181x141.jpg 181w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/MLK001-768x599.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>One of the most notable parts of Benjamin Gettler\u2019s life and work is his time spent on the Board of Trustees at the University of Cincinnati.\u00a0 He was appointed by Governor George Voinovich in 1993 and elected to chairman of the board in 2000, from which he retired in 2002.\u00a0 While sorting through the records related to his tenure, I was really struck by the massive amount of thought and work that not only goes into shaping the experience for UC students, but also into the surrounding community.<\/p>\n<p>Among the various campus-life projects represented in the collection, one that is very interesting is the long-term plan to improve the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Jefferson Avenue, and Vine Street.\u00a0 At that time, Uptown (Avondale, Clifton, Clifton <a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/MLK002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-34636\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/MLK002.jpg\" alt=\"Martin Luther King and Vine Street Intersection\" width=\"400\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/MLK002.jpg 967w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/MLK002-181x141.jpg 181w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/MLK002-768x599.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>Heights, Corryville, Fairview, Mt.
