We will raise a glass in his honor in connection with his birthday and the 2,000-year anniversary of his death.<\/p>\n<p>The evening will begin with welcoming remarks by Rebecka Lindau, head of the Classics Library. Bridget Langley, visiting assistant professor in the College of Arts and Sciences\u2019 Department of Classics, will give a brief presentation of Ovid\u2019s life and work. Colin Shelton, adjunct professor in Classics, will follow with a reading of two of Ovid\u2019s <i>Metamorphoses<\/i> in Latin and in translation by modern English poet Ted Hughes. Jenny Doctor, head of the Albino Gorno Memorial Music Library, will introduce a musical performance by modern English composer Benjamin Britten, \u201cSix Metamorphoses after Ovid,\u201d featuring College-Conservatory of Music oboist Yo Shionoya.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35037\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35037\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35037\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Ovid-exhibit1web.jpg\" alt=\"Ovid's Metamorphoses\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Ovid-exhibit1web.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Ovid-exhibit1web-217x141.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35037\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ovid&#8217;s Metamorphoses<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The evening will conclude with refreshments Ovid and his contemporaries would have enjoyed. The event will be presided over by Emperor Augustus himself in the form of a copy of the original marble head discovered at Troy during an excavation led by UC\u2019s Classics Department. Additionally, the library will feature a book exhibition with works of Ovid, including rare editions of the <i>Metamorphoses<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The event is free and open to all.
