Wilson<\/a>, detailed the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joinallofus.org\/en\">All of Us<\/a>\u00a0program the National Library of Medicine and National institute of Health have funded and promoted. Individuals are allowed to take charge of their health by participating\u00a0in\u00a0and directing research. Parts of the program include providing access to resources at libraries, community centers, and laundromats to reach the broadest population.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The mor<a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Headshot_Reem_Aly_small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-38055 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Headshot_Reem_Aly_small.jpg\" alt=\"Reflections of UC Data Day 2019 &#8211;\" width=\"183\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a>ning panel on Health Equities and Disparities featured speakers from\u00a0UC and from\u00a0the Cincinnati region.\u00a0Reem\u00a0Aly from Health Policy Institute of Ohio spoke on closing equity gaps for health in Ohio. Tammy\u00a0Mentzel\u00a0from CCM showed a snapshot of health disparities in Cincinnati and how discrimination affects quality of life with medical care.\u00a0Dr. Sarah Pickle (UC\u00a0Dept\u00a0of Family and Community Medicine) and Stef\u00a0Murawsky\u00a0(PhD Candidate, Sociology)\u00a0jointly\u00a0spoke\u00a0about\u00a0best practices in training of health care professionals in transgender medicine including\u00a0disparities in\u00a0the need for inclusive language when designing surveys, especially when asking for birth sex and current gender.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Theresa-Culley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-38056\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Theresa-Culley.jpg\" alt=\"Reflections of UC Data Day 2019 &#8211;\" width=\"213\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Theresa-Culley.jpg 213w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Theresa-Culley-94x141.jpg 94w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Three UC faculty discussed\u00a0Data Empowering Social Justice in the afternoon panel. Theresa M. Culley, Professor and Head of Biological\u00a0Sciences,\u00a0presented on her lab\u2019s study on whether scientists in developing countries are being recognized in works created with their assistance with authorship.\u00a0Brian Howe, Assistant Professor of Clinical Law, The Ohio Innocence Project\/Rosenthal Institute of Justice,\u00a0discussed wrongful\u00a0conviction and the state of forensic testimony and how the Ohio Innocence Project is working for change based on new data. Christopher J. Sullivan from the School of Criminal Justice reviewed findings from a recent study on data extracted from juvenile court and police agencies around Ohio to understand patterns of disproportionate minority contact in Ohio\u2019s\u00a0Juvenile Justice System.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The second keynote speaker,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimhd.nih.gov\/about\/overview\/staff-directory\/duran.html\">Dr. Deborah Duran<\/a>, the Director of\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimhd.nih.gov\/\">National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparity<\/a>\u2019s Office of Science Policy, Strategic Planning, Analysis, Reporting, and Data (OSPARD), covered how data needs to be evaluated and re-evaluated for health disparities. AI\u00a0(Artificiail\u00a0Intelligence)\u00a0in diagnosing illness is only as good as the data provided to it. Data collection should be evaluated for true representation of the population.<\/p>\n<p>Over 250 people attended the all-day conference held at the Great Hall at TUC. Attendees interacted with each other, the panelists, key speakers, and service content providers during the day. During lunch,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.uc.edu\/concern\/documents\/bn9998001?locale=en\">service providers<\/a>\u00a0from the university and beyond were available for consultation. Members from the National Library of Medicine, the Office of Research, UCL Research &amp; Data Services, UC Scholar, and the Super Computing Center were available.<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon a Power Session\u00a0workshop on R and Data Visualization, \u201cInteractive Mapping of Social Vulnerability using R,\u201d\u00a0was\u00a0held by Richard Johansen, Data Visualization Specialist and Mark Chalmers, Science and Engineering Librarian. With presenters speaking on topics ranging from the Ohio Innocence Project to how to properly design survey questions to account for trans and non-binary persons to publication bias in botany literature, I feel confident that every attendee likely encountered a topic or issue in data collection or management that was completely new to them and will benefit them as they engage with data in the in future.\u201d\u00a0 \u2013 Rebecca Morgan<\/p>\n<p>\u201cData Day was a bit different than what I\u2019d expected, but in a good way. Before studying the schedule, I had imagined it would be almost entirely hands-on skills development \u2013 the \u2018how\u2019 of research data. And while the event featured a power session that introduced participants to the R programming language, most of the day\u2019s sessions focused instead on the big picture of research data \u2013 the \u2018why.\u2019\u201d &#8211; Elena Azadbakht.
