{"id":38909,"date":"2019-11-07T16:51:01","date_gmt":"2019-11-07T20:51:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/?p=38909"},"modified":"2019-11-07T17:02:25","modified_gmt":"2019-11-07T21:02:25","slug":"james-lee-appointed-associate-vice-provost-for-digital-scholarship-and-associate-dean-of-libraries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/2019\/11\/james-lee-appointed-associate-vice-provost-for-digital-scholarship-and-associate-dean-of-libraries\/","title":{"rendered":"James Lee Appointed Associate Vice Provost for Digital Scholarship and Associate Dean of Libraries"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_38910\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38910\" class=\"wp-image-38910\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Headshot-Suit.jpg\" alt=\"James Lee\" width=\"300\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Headshot-Suit.jpg 498w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Headshot-Suit-140x141.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38910\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">James Lee<\/p><\/div>\n<p>James Lee has been appointed associate vice provost for digital scholarship and associate dean of libraries effective November 1, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;James\u2019 new role is a direct investment from\u00a0university leadership to support UC Libraries\u2019 growing responsibility to lead our institution\u2019s enterprise-wide digital scholarship and digital integration vision,&#8221; said Xuemao Wang, vice provost for digital scholarship and dean and university librarian.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0May 2019,\u00a0Provost\u00a0Kristi\u00a0Nelson and Vice President\u00a0for Research\u00a0Pat Limbach\u00a0jointly announced that UC Libraries\u2019 Digital Scholarship Center (DSC) was selected as one of the first\u00a0six\u00a0anchor teams for\u00a0the Digital Futures initiative.\u00a0Digital Futures is integral to the Next Lives Here vision in UC\u2019s strategic plan: \u201cIt will empower diverse teams of thinkers and doers to push the boundaries of what\u2019s possible,\u201d\u00a0President Neville\u00a0Pinto said, \u201cto bend the future in Cincinnati\u2019s direction.\u201d\u00a0In\u00a0July 2019, Provost Nelson announced Dean Wang&#8217;s expanded responsibilities as vice provost for digital scholarship, describing his new portfolio as \u201c&#8230;covering a broad spectrum of areas including the DSC,\u00a0Scholar@UC and research and data management, but also digital archives and preservation, digital records and assets management, scholarly communication and digital publishing, as well as the rapidly evolving movements of open science, open education resources, open data and open access.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Professor Lee is currently the director of the Digital Scholarship Center and an associate professor of digital humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences where he will continue to teach digital humanities related courses.\u00a0He leads the research activities of the DSC and brings to the enterprise digital integration vision expertise in the areas of digital humanities, machine learning + text mining techniques on archives, social network analysis and data visualization. Much of his work has used machine learning methods applied to large text corpora and other unstructured datasets to rethink what it means to perform historical analysis. His research also investigates ways to visualize the results of machine learning algorithms in an interpretable way that enables non-technical audiences to glean useful information from the data.\u00a0His research has been published widely in a diverse range of disciplines,\u00a0reflecting collaborations that apply digital humanities methods with partners in biomedical informatics, new media, law, design and archeology among others. To date, he has served in leadership roles for over $3 million in grants, notably $1.6M (at Grinnell College and the University of Iowa) and $900,000 (at the University of Cincinnati) awards from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Dr. Lee received his B.A. from Cornell University and earned his Ph.D from the University of California, Berkeley.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think this expanded role will continue much of the work I&#8217;ve already been doing, but for more people and more projects.
