{"id":40522,"date":"2020-12-09T16:00:47","date_gmt":"2020-12-09T20:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/?p=40522"},"modified":"2021-01-06T20:48:49","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T00:48:49","slug":"uc-data-day-wrap-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/2020\/12\/uc-data-day-wrap-up\/","title":{"rendered":"UC Data Day Wrap-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Oct 23<sup>rd<\/sup> UC Libraries and IT@UC partnered for the 5<sup>th<\/sup> UC Data Day.\u00a0 This year\u2019s all virtual event featured, two power sessions, a Keynote by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glenn_Ricart\">Glenn Ricart<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.us-ignite.org\/\">US Ignite<\/a>, and an interactive panel session of multidisciplinary faculty.<\/p>\n<p>The event started with the first power session by George Turner, Indiana University\u2019s (IU) Chief Systems Architect with <a href=\"https:\/\/pti.iu.edu\/\">IU\u2019s Pervasive Technologies Institute<\/a> (PTI).\u00a0 Mr. Turner led participants through an introduction to high performance computing and demonstrated <a href=\"https:\/\/ituc.service-now.com\/com.glideapp.servicecatalog_cat_item_view.do?v=1&amp;sysparm_id=7aba6584db0f88504427ea3b4b9619ac&amp;sysparm_link_parent=71622bd51b29c810700fddf2cc4bcb65&amp;sysparm_catalog=e0d08b13c3330100c8b837659bba8fb4&amp;sysparm_catalog_view=catalog_default&amp;sysparm_view=text_search\">how to access<\/a> the UC <a href=\"https:\/\/research.uc.edu\/arc\">Advanced Research Computing (ARC) system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dsc.uc.edu\/about-us\">Erin McCabe<\/a>, Digital Scholarship Fellow with <a href=\"https:\/\/dsc.uc.edu\/\">UC Libraries Digital Scholarship Center<\/a> (DSC) led the second session on text mining and natural language processing.\u00a0 Both sessions had a hands-on component with participants accessing the ARC system as well as engaging with the<a href=\"https:\/\/themlmom.com\/\"> DSC platform<\/a> for text mining.<\/p>\n<p>Glenn Ricart of US Ignite gave a keynote address steeped in his own personal data that highlighted how much data one individual creates and how this data is being used to make policy decisions, drive business and help us image the future.\u00a0 He also discussed the problems of our dependence on data and possible pitfalls and wrongdoings.<\/p>\n<p>The closing session of the day was the interactive panel moderated by <a href=\"https:\/\/researchdirectory.uc.edu\/p\/dunawawm\">Michael Dunaway<\/a>, PhD (UC Executive Director of the Digital Futures Resilience Program).\u00a0 Dr. Dunaway started us off by asking two questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How is ubiquitous data changing your work as a Researcher, Educator, and\/or Clinician, and its contribution to society?<\/li>\n<li>How is ubiquitous data changing society and shaping our sense of community?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Six faculty from very different disciplines who use data in very different ways shared their perspectives on the keynote and the state of data literacy education at UC.\u00a0 Glenn Ricart also participated in the discussion and affirmed the conclusions that was best stated by <a href=\"https:\/\/researchdirectory.uc.edu\/p\/gaskinwb\">Whitney Gaskins<\/a> (CEAS Assistant Dean and Assistant Professor- Office of Inclusive Excellence &amp; Community Engagement) when she said \u201cWe need to educate students to be more numbers literate.\u201d\u00a0 Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/researchdirectory.uc.edu\/p\/vagala\">Achala Vagal<\/a> (MD, Radiology) expressed that the amount of data will only continue to grow per the example of medical imaging data and its storage needs.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/researchdirectory.uc.edu\/p\/bienerzi\">Zvi Biener<\/a>, PhD (Associate Professor Philosophy| History | Judaic Studies department, and the Center for Public Engagement with Science) highlighted how the approach to evaluating data changed with Newton, and we have to continue to question if we are truly gaining knowledge from all the data generated.\u00a0 Both <a href=\"https:\/\/researchdirectory.uc.edu\/p\/kharept\">Prashant Khare<\/a> (Asst.
