May is Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) <\/span>M<\/span>onth. To celebrate, the CECH <\/span>L<\/span>ibrary<\/span> has created a list of books by AAPI authors. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Update: <\/span><\/span>The use of the term #<\/span>OwnVoices<\/span>\u00a0has been discontinued by\u00a0We Need Diverse Books<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and the booklist below has been updated to reflect that. <\/span>#OwnVoices has been used by many publishers\/bookstores as\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>catch all for diverse authors and illustrators,\u00a0<\/span>making it a vague term that hides\u00a0<\/span>the diverse identities of the authors and the book characters from the narrative.<\/span><\/span> Why We Need Diverse Books Is No Longer Using the Term #OwnVoices<\/a>.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n What makes a book<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Own Voices?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n An Own Voices book is one that is written by an author that is part of a<\/span>n under-represented<\/span>\u00a0group<\/span>\u00a0that f<\/span>eatures characters that are also part of that group. For example, if an author is part of the LGBTQ+ community and they write about a\u00a0<\/span>character that is also part of the LGBTQ+ community then that book is an Own Voices book.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n #OwnVoices was created by Corinne\u00a0<\/span>Duyvis<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>a young adult author<\/span>\u00a0and co-founder of\u00a0<\/span>Disability in Kidlit<\/span><\/a>. She created the hashtag\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>shar<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>diverse\u00a0<\/span>children\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>literature.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Why are Own Voices books important?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Own Voices books\u00a0<\/span>amplif<\/span>y\u00a0<\/span>diverse voices\u00a0<\/span>and provide necessary and important representation\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>our<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>shelves<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>When\u00a0<\/span>book authors identify with\u00a0<\/span>the same group as their\u00a0<\/span>characters,<\/span>\u00a0they are more likely to have accurate and nuanced portrayals of that group than an author who is an outsider.\u00a0<\/span>Own Voices books are also less likely to perpetuate harmful stereotypes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n How can I find Own Voices books?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Many libraries, bookstores, and publishers develop Own Voices book lists.\u00a0<\/span>You can also search<\/span>\u00a0for #OwnVoices on social media to find reviews and book<\/span>\u00a0lists.<\/span>\u00a0 CECH Library’s AAPI book list<\/a> is also available via our Children’s and Young Adult Literature LibGuide<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n Interested in learning more?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Post and book list by\u00a0Haley Shaw, CECH Temporary Librarian<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" May is Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month.
