The theme of this year&#8217;s virtual event was <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bias, Miscommunication, and Equity in Data<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and featured a Keynote by\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weallcount.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Heather Krause<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, two interactive panel sessions, and a weeklong virtual screening of the documentary film\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Coded Bias<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0This year\u2019s event had 145 attendees and 29 views of the film.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following the opening remarks of\u00a0Xuemao\u00a0Wang, Vice Provost for Digital Scholarship and Dean and University Librarian of UC Libraries,\u00a0Data Day commenced with the keynote by\u00a0Heather Krause,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/idatassist.com\/team\/heather-krause\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">PStat<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and Founder of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weallcount.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">We All Count<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Heather challenged the traditional notion of data&#8217;s objectivity, reminding attendees that researchers must make choices and these choices are not objective. Heather also walked participants through several examples of research questions and demonstrated how the questions could be better designed with equity in mind and the onus of change on systems.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0She emphasized to participants that there is no &#8220;silver bullet&#8221; against bias, prejudice, and injustice, and we all must remain vigilant and consider who&#8217;s lived experiences are being centered, even at the onset of a project such as when formulating a research question. Heather was engaging and took many thought-provoking questions from the audience. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Heather\u00a0stayed\u00a0as the moderator of the first panel session on\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bias, Miscommunication, and Equity in Data<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. She was joined by\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Ebony Ruhland (Assistant\u00a0Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at the University of Cincinnati),\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Jeff Blevins (Professor of Journalism at the University of Cincinnati), and\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Margarita\u00a0Boenig-Liptsin\u00a0(Research\u00a0Fellow at the Paris Institute of Advanced Study).\u00a0\u00a0The panel discussed\u00a0communication and ethics of data framing it around the term coined by Dr. Blevins,\u00a0\u201cthe social media marketplace of ideas\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The film\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/coded-bias\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Coded Bias<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which informed the second panel discussion, follows M.I.T.\u00a0Mediba\u00a0Lab computer scientist Joy\u00a0Buolamwini\u00a0along with data scientists, mathematicians, and global watchdog groups as they expose\u00a0the prevalent discrimination within algorithms.\u00a0It\u00a0demonstrates that the very machine-learning algorithms intended to avoid prejudice are only as unbiased as the humans and historical data programming them.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The plot of the film served as the\u00a0theme for\u00a0the final\u00a0interactive panel discussion\u00a0moderated by Chris\u00a0Collins\u00a0(Founder and Technical Lead of the UC Center for Simulations &amp; virtual Environments Research). Chris was joined by\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Anissa\u00a0Tanweer\u00a0(Research Scientist at the University of Washington&#8217;s eScience Institute),\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Deeptankar\u00a0DeMazumder\u00a0(Director of the Artificial Intelligence and Precision Medicine Center of Excellence, and PI of the\u00a0Neurocardiology\u00a0Research Lab in the Division of Cardiology)\u00a0and\u00a0Nirmalya\u00a0Thakur (Instructor and\u00a0researcher with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Cincinnati).\u00a0These panelists outlined the\u00a0\u201cgood vs. bad of AI\u201d\u00a0discussing the pros and cons of the ABC\u2019s: Availability of data, Braided systems, and Computational power\u00a0and\u00a0how AI understands user interactions.\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Demazumder\u00a0highlighted how AI facilitates information but is not an advocate of AI making the decision.
