\"poetryIn celebration of National Poetry Month, an exhibit installed on the 4th floor lobby of the Walter C. Langsam Library features work by the 2022\/23 Poetry Stacked poets. Included in the exhibit are poems from 13 of the University of Cincinnati student, faculty and community member poets that read at the series. Included in the exhibit are UC faculty poets: Aditi Machado, Rebecca Lindenberg, Felicia Zamora and Simone Savannah.<\/p>\n

Bottle Brush Bees<\/h3>\n

The red-blossomed bush
\nfurred out in the corner
\nof the narrow yard sizzles
\nwith bees, bristled
\ncylindrical flowers tipped
\nwith yellow pollen lure
\ntheir fuzzy thieves. Once
\nor maybe twice a month
\nbarefoot she or her sister
\nmight find one, lightning
\nin the grass; they
\ndevised a whole lexicon
\nfor sting<\/em> \u2013 bee-branded,
\nbumble-shocked,\u00a0 bee-
\nneedled, honey-rung \u2013
\ndespite all their words
\nwhat she\u2019ll remember is
\nnot how it feels to be stung,
\nbut their constant song.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Witness<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Your daughter is dancing, says my wife
\ntouching her belly.<\/p>\n

For the past five months
\nI have been a witness
\nto what happens there,
\nunder her hands.<\/p>\n

My wife is a house inside my house
\nand I am outside of my own heart.<\/p>\n

I am sure she is happy, she says
\nand I would give up poetry
\nin exchange for having, inside me, my daughter.
\nFor feeling that dance that bonds them
\nto all beginnings.<\/p>\n

But that option does not exist
\nand I do what I can:
\ncooking, fulfilling cravings,
\nwriting a poem in which I say what I can see
\nfrom this side of the skin
\nin which mystery embodies itself.<\/p>\n

And I testify, with loving envy,
\nthat an everyday miracle
\nis a miracle<\/p>\n

and nothing less.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A highlight of Poetry Stacked are the UC students who read at each session. Students featured in the exhibit are: Dior Stephens, Romie Hern\u00e1ndez Morgan, Hussain Ahmed and Casey Harloe.<\/p>\n

\nthe boredom
\nI carry &
\nthe adventure
\nI crave
\nthe journey
\ndoesn\u2019t begin

The exhibit was curated and designed by Melissa Cox Norris, director of library communications. A bibliography<\/a> of the poets’ works is available at the exhibit and online.<\/p>\n

Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month<\/a> is a special occasion that celebrates poets\u2019 integral role in our culture and that poetry matters.<\/p>\n

And don’t miss the next Poetry Stacked event<\/a>, scheduled for Wednesday, April 12 at 4pm<\/strong>, featuring Kari Gunter-Seymour, Poet Laureate of Ohio, and celebrating poetry by graduating University of Cincinnati doctoral students: Nick Molbert, Marianne Chan, Connor Yeck and Taylor Byas. Following the poetry readings, attendees are invited to a reception in the Elliston Poetry Room as we mark the successful conclusion of the 2022\/23 Poetry Stacked series.<\/p>\n
