Voces\u00a0J\u00edbaras<\/a><\/em>\u00a0is an extensive\u00a0collection of\u00a0j\u00edbaro\u00a0words otherwise known as\u00a0jibar\u00edsmos.\u00a0Jibar\u00edsmos\u00a0are words that the rural people of Puerto Rico use in their day-to-day conversations.\u00a0As time\u00a0goes by, many of these words have been lost\u00a0from Puerto Rican dialog.\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Oyola\u00a0Cintr\u00f3n\u00a0delved into the research of these words and\u00a0includes\u00a0more\u00a0than 1300\u00a0jibar\u00edsmos\u00a0and their definitions\u00a0in his book.\u00a0This\u00a0endeavor\u00a0started in\u00a01965\u00a0and was concluded\u00a0in 2017.\u00a0The first\u00a0edition\u00a0of the book was published in 2021.

The book is divided into three parts:
1. A social-historical commentary on the jibaro and their spoken word
2. The collection of jibar\u00edsmos\u00a0and their definition
3. 15 short stories that use the\u00a0jibar\u00edsmos\u00a0vocabulary.\u00a0They\u00a0all cover themes\u00a0including rural life, traditions, and personal growth and improvement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This collection of history, words, and stories is the first addition to the Cohen Collection in 2026.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the Author:<\/strong>
Mr. Oyola Cintr\u00f3n is a native of Naranjito, Puerto Rico and a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico with studies in education, biology, social work, and administration. He is the author of Juvenile Deliquents: Strategies for Helping Them. He is known for his professional and voluntary work. He lives in Bayam\u00f3n, Puerto Rico, with his wife, Carmen Aida. They have been married for over 50 years. He has four children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.  His granddaughter, M\u00f3nica G\u00f3mez, attends the University of Cincinnati. UCL is proud to add Mr. Oyola Cintr\u00f3n\u2019s collection of jibar\u00edsmos,  history, and tales as the first 2026 selection to the Cohen Collection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the collection:<\/strong>
The Cohen collection is funded by an endowment gifted to the library by Julie Cohen in honor of her parents, Ralph and Dolly Cohen. It was created to start a reading room with the purpose of enriching the humanities. The titles selected represent a wide variety of disciplines and currently curated by Margaux Patel, with acquisitions and cataloging support provided by UCL\u2019s Content Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
