{"id":635,"date":"2009-09-28T12:34:18","date_gmt":"2009-09-28T16:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/?p=635"},"modified":"2009-10-08T14:57:01","modified_gmt":"2009-10-08T18:57:01","slug":"book-of-mormon-conservation-completed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/2009\/09\/book-of-mormon-conservation-completed\/","title":{"rendered":"Book of Mormon Conservation Completed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/mormon_book.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-671\" style=\"margin: 5px\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/mormon_book.jpg\" alt=\"mormon_book\" width=\"177\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>The Archives &amp; Rare Books Library\u2019s first edition copy of <em>The Book of Mormon<\/em> recently underwent conservation treatment to clean and repair its binding and text block.\u00a0 The work was undertaken as part of the University of Cincinnati Libraries\u2019 larger preservation efforts for special materials.<\/p>\n<p>ARB holdings include many sacred texts, from Qur\u2019ans and Bibles to Buddhist leaf books.\u00a0 Its copy of <em>The Book of Mormon<\/em> receives a great deal of use, so it is important that it be preserved for future students and scholars.\u00a0 This first edition of the book was published in 1830 in Palmyra, New York by Joseph Smith, and is considered one of the primary books of faith by the Latter Day Saints.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The restoration was done by conservator Gabrielle Fox and her student assistant, <a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/mormon_page3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-713\" style=\"margin: 6px\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/mormon_page51.jpg\" alt=\"mormon_page5\" width=\"162\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a>Laura Caravantes.\u00a0 Fox replaced the worn end papers with a marbled paper similar in look to standard 19<sup>th<\/sup> century marbling designs. She also cleaned the soiled pages, repaired some minor tears, and restored and stabilized the full black leather binding.\u00a0 Caravantes then constructed an archival clamshell box to securely hold the volume.\u00a0 The bookplate, indicating that the volume was part of the Robert Clarke collection that was donated to the University of Cincinnati in 1898 by William A.
