{"id":6364,"date":"2011-03-23T11:49:49","date_gmt":"2011-03-23T15:49:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/?p=6364"},"modified":"2011-03-23T11:50:43","modified_gmt":"2011-03-23T15:50:43","slug":"viewing-egypt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/2011\/03\/viewing-egypt\/","title":{"rendered":"Viewing Egypt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Kevin Grace<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6366\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/an-egyptian-bey_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6366\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6366    \" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/an-egyptian-bey_2.jpg\" alt=\"Viewing Egypt\" width=\"242\" height=\"369\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6366\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An Eqyptian Bey<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">In the early weeks of 2011, the uprisings in the Arab world increased from the beginning protest in Tunisia that toppled a government to the Mideast \u2013 Yemen, Jordan, and Iraq.\u00a0 The protests continue, but none have been so prolonged and so pronounced as those in Egypt and in the Maghreb, particularly the rebellion in Libya.<\/p>\n<p>The revolt in Egypt was certainly one of the most dramatic ones \u2013 the continual protest and action in the streets resulted in the end of the Mubarek regime.\u00a0 During the uprising, a University of Cincinnati professor and a UC student were there in the middle of it.\u00a0 One effect of these protests and armed rebellions is that to this time, we have been relatively uninformed about that area of the world.\u00a0 Now, with instant internet coverage, tweets, blogs, Facebook and other social media, we are presented with fresh images of the countries and the cultures of North Africa.\u00a0 Despite this extensive news coverage, we still lack an historical understanding of the Arab nations along the Mediterranean rim, even though media reports and commentaries provide substantial looks at current situations.<!--more-->Questions remain as to how Egypt, Libya, and other lands came to be regarded as they have in our imaginations and in our understanding.\u00a0 Recently, we have scanned several images from our rare books on the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century European view of Egypt.\u00a0 The pictures illustrate the wonder in which artists and photographers and chroniclers expressed when they bore witness to Egyptian life.\u00a0 In some ways, they can be viewed as a bit overwrought in their romantic view of a strange land, but they are frequently accurate in their details of landscapes and daily life.\u00a0 In the Western world, these are the images that formed our historical perspective of North Africa.\u00a0 Coupled with current events, perhaps they will contribute to a fuller understanding of Egyptian traditions and heritage<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6461\" style=\"width: 373px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Entrance-to-the-Great-temple_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6461\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6461  \" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Entrance-to-the-Great-temple_2.jpg\" alt=\"Viewing Egypt\" width=\"363\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6461\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Entrance to the Great Temple<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the rich collection specialties of the Archives &amp;
