His successful protection of Baltimore and command of the Department of Eastern Virginia earned him the command of the Department of the Gulf, where he took control of the captured city of New Orleans early in 1862. But the accolades ended here, and the rest of his military career was marked with controversy and strife. Butler<\/em><em>, <\/em>a five-volume set of correspondence to, from, and about Butler during the entire span of the Civil War. We have an impressive collection of rare books on the Civil War that can be used as primary source material for research projects. Of general interest are the ten-volume set <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libraries.uc.edu\/libraries\/arb\/exhibits\/civil-war\/PhotographicHistory.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Photographic History of the Civil War<\/em><\/a><em> and <\/em><em>Harper\u2019s Weekly<\/em><em>, w<\/em>hich faithfully reported events throughout the war.\u00a0 We also have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libraries.uc.edu\/libraries\/arb\/exhibits\/civil-war\/RareBooks.html\" target=\"_blank\">subject-specific books<\/a><em> <\/em>such as those about General Butler.
