{"id":9836,"date":"2011-08-17T13:29:09","date_gmt":"2011-08-17T17:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/?p=9836"},"modified":"2011-08-17T13:29:09","modified_gmt":"2011-08-17T17:29:09","slug":"another-alma-mater-moment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/2011\/08\/another-alma-mater-moment\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Alma Mater Moment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Kevin Grace<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/murad_tobacco.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9837 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 8px\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/murad_tobacco.jpg\" alt=\"Another Alma Mater Moment\" width=\"287\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a>Following up on the 1935 postcard of the last days of UC\u2019s original building in last week\u2019s ARB blogs, here are a couple more ephemeral treasures.\u00a0 In this age of various tobacco prohibitions in our culture, we\u2019re a bit surprised when we chance upon the reminders of commonplace tobacco use from a century ago.\u00a0 For most of its history, the UC community treated smoking as just another part of campus life.\u00a0 In our not-so-distant past there were \u201cbutt huts\u201d scattered around campus where smokers could stand sheltered from the rain and snow, but certainly not from the cold and gloom.<!--more--> And in the years before the huts, <a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/egypt_silk_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9874\" style=\"margin: 6px\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/liblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/egypt_silk_2.jpg\" alt=\"Another Alma Mater Moment\" width=\"287\" height=\"504\" \/><\/a>smoking was acceptable in offices and classrooms.\u00a0 Decades ago there was even a facetiously-named \u201cNicotine Society\u201d at the University of Cincinnati.<\/p>\n<p>And, going much further back in our Bearcat heritage, the student newspapers, athletic programs, and even the yearbooks carried advertisements for cigarettes, cigars, and loose tobacco.\u00a0 The purchase of tobacco or cigarettes in the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century often provided the buyer with little souvenir premiums, rather like a prize in a Cracker Jack box.\u00a0 The most notable of these tobacco inserts were, of course, baseball cards \u2013 long before the card packets were accompanied with a stick of stale chewing gum.\u00a0 But tobacco companies also offered premiums of other sorts \u2013 actors and actresses, famous Indians, ships, and nearly everything else.<\/p>\n<p>From around 1900 to World War I, several companies offered inserts that appealed to students of individual universities.\u00a0 The two images here are of University of Cincinnati insert premiums, a small tobacco card and a tobacco silk.\u00a0 The former is from the Murad Cigarette Company, measuring 2\u201d by 2 1\/2\u201d, as part of their \u201cCollege Series\u201d that included Indiana University, the University of Chicago, West Virginia University, and dozens of others.\u00a0 The silk, 2\u201d x 3\u201d, is from a packet of Egyptienne Luxury Cigarettes.\u00a0 Small leather rectangles, similar to the silks, were also produced with college logos and seals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Kevin Grace Following up on the 1935 postcard of the last days of UC\u2019s original building in last week\u2019s ARB blogs, here are a couple more ephemeral treasures.\u00a0 In this age of various tobacco prohibitions in our culture, we\u2019re &hellip;
