- Johannes Oporinus--Artist: presumed to be Hans Bockm, c. 1585, Courtesy Kunstmuseum Basel—A scholar, Oporinus held the chair of Greek language at the University of Basel. He opened a print shop specializing in classical texts and their translations. Once, arrested and imprisoned for printing a Latin translation of the Koran, Martin Luther came to his aid reassuring Basel city officials that printing the Koran could only benefit Christianity, not harm it. The Fabrica would be his best-known printing.
