{"id":3099,"date":"2022-04-14T13:59:11","date_gmt":"2022-04-14T17:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/source\/?p=3099"},"modified":"2022-04-18T11:43:06","modified_gmt":"2022-04-18T15:43:06","slug":"mikaila-corday-awarded-the-2022-marian-spencer-equity-ambassador-award-for-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/source\/mikaila-corday-awarded-the-2022-marian-spencer-equity-ambassador-award-for-staff\/","title":{"rendered":"Mikaila Corday Awarded the 2022 Marian Spencer Equity Ambassador Award for Staff"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mikaila Corday, serials cataloger in the Electronic Resources Department at the University of Cincinnati Libraries, in a ceremony held April 12 was honored to receive the <strong>2022 Marian&nbsp;Spencer&nbsp;Equity Ambassador&nbsp;Award&nbsp;for Staff<\/strong>.&nbsp;Named for the celebrated civil rights activist, this&nbsp;award&nbsp;is designed to showcase current campus-affiliated individuals and groups whose efforts related to diversity, equity and inclusion have had a positive impact on the university.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:38% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"504\" height=\"370\" src=\"http:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/source\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/mikaila.jpg\" alt=\"mikaila corday receiving award\" class=\"wp-image-3151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/source\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/mikaila.jpg 504w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/source\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/mikaila-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Mikaila was nominated by her colleagues for her work to promote&nbsp;awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion; for exhibiting sensitivity to people of various cultures; facilitating growth among colleagues and peers; preparing students, faculty and staff to thrive in a diverse and global workforce; and for collaborating with colleagues to create and implement initiatives and policies that build an equitable and inclusive environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One nominator wrote of Mikaila, \u201cthroughout the years I&#8217;ve attended numerous workshops for DEI with Mikaila, and it\u2019s a continuous learning process for her.&nbsp;This last year she has gone beyond measure to promote awareness and educate others by creating an awesome library guide, <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.libraries.uc.edu\/racialjusticeresources\/home\">Racial Justice Resources for Activists, Advocates &amp; Allies<\/a>, that encompasses DEI and so much more.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With links to library and other resources, the LibGuide aims to support the work of racial justice&nbsp;activists, advocates and allies by providing resources for self-guided education including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Core&nbsp;concepts needed to understand the inter-generational effects of systemic racism and its&nbsp;impact today on the lives of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color), our society and the structures within it.<\/li><li>Healing and wellness resources for the BIPOC community<\/li><li>Information intended to help us better understand ourselves; especially how our social&nbsp;identities impact others so that we can be more effective activists,&nbsp;advocates &amp; allies for racial justice.<\/li><li>Tools, tips and services to assist student advocates and activists to help&nbsp;them document and archive their work to ensure it&nbsp;will be discoverable and accessible&nbsp;to others even after they graduate.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Data to guide us in our goals setting&nbsp;and policy creation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In creating the LibGuide, Mikaila enhanced her personal and professional development by conducting the research for the guide.\u00a0\u201cMikaila has been and continues to be vigilant in trying to protect marginalized groups by being an ally, advocating and being active by using her privileges to promote awareness and solutions to help those whose voices aren&#8217;t heard,\u201d said her nominator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mikaila is passionate about creating seamless access for library users to the Libraries\u2019 wealth of online resources. After the 2020 death of George Floyd and hearing President\u2019s Pinto\u2019s words that we must use our \u201cown campus experts to eliminate structural racism throughout the educational life cycle,\u201d Mikaila responded to the needs of the UC community by creating the LibGuide.
