{"id":2344,"date":"2019-06-11T13:21:35","date_gmt":"2019-06-11T13:21:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/?p=2344"},"modified":"2019-06-11T13:21:35","modified_gmt":"2019-06-11T13:21:35","slug":"fun-with-photodoc-edition-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/2019\/06\/fun-with-photodoc-edition-10","title":{"rendered":"Fun with PhotoDoc (Edition 10)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since it&#8217;s Tuesday, but you&#8217;re probably wishing it was Friday, I\u00a0 thought I&#8217;d share some fun gifs of <a href=\"http:\/\/uclid.uc.edu\/record=b1537939\">a 16th century German ophthalmolgy book from UC&#8217;s Archives &amp; Rare Books Library<\/a> that was recently treated and returned.\u00a0 But first, let&#8217;s take a look at the treatment carried out by our conservator, Ashleigh Schieszer.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThis full vellum binding suffered the same fate as many other stiff board vellum bindings:\u00a0 significantly warped boards, a result of fluctuations in humidity.\u00a0 The volume arrived in the lab with vellum losses along the head and tail of the spine.\u00a0 There was also evidence of two ties at the fore edge that would have originally been used to keep the boards from warping, however, all but a small fragment of these ties were lost.\u00a0 Ashleigh humidified and flattened the upper and lower boards and added new alum-tawed ties sympathetic to the placement and size of the original ties.\u00a0 The binding was then housed in a cloth covered compression clamshell (created by our box-making magician, Chris) to help keep the boards from warping in the future.<br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_2349\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/i1732242x_1020_D16N.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2349\" class=\"wp-image-2349 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/i1732242x_1020_D16N-1024x1017.jpg\" alt=\"Fun with PhotoDoc (Edition 10)\" width=\"625\" height=\"621\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2349\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here you can see the fragment of the original tie with the new tie inserted below it.<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nNow onto the gifs.\u00a0 This volume has several anatomical flap prints that explore the inner working of the eye.\u00a0 Here are two of the flap prints, one which takes a look at the brain from above and another that examines the eye from the side:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Brain.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2352 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Brain.gif\" alt=\"Fun with PhotoDoc (Edition 10)\" width=\"900\" height=\"709\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Eyeball.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2353 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Eyeball.gif\" alt=\"Fun with PhotoDoc (Edition 10)\" width=\"900\" height=\"678\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWe were in luck that these particular anatomical flap prints were in relatively good condition when they came to the lab.\u00a0 However, that is usually not the case with these very fragile multi-component prints.\u00a0 If you are interested in the learning more about the history, treatment and exhibition of these prints, check out Meg Brown&#8217;s article <a href=\"https:\/\/cool.conservation-us.org\/coolaic\/sg\/bpg\/annual\/v32\/bp32-02.pdf\">&#8220;Flip, Flap and Crack&#8221;<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong>Jessica Ebert [UCL] \u2013 Conservation Tech\/Photographic Documentation Tech<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since it&#8217;s Tuesday, but you&#8217;re probably wishing it was Friday, I\u00a0 thought I&#8217;d share some fun gifs of a 16th century German ophthalmolgy book from UC&#8217;s Archives &amp; Rare Books Library that was recently treated and returned.\u00a0 But first, let&#8217;s take a look at the treatment carried out by our conservator, Ashleigh Schieszer.
