{"id":2465,"date":"2019-09-27T15:06:15","date_gmt":"2019-09-27T15:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/?p=2465"},"modified":"2019-09-27T15:06:15","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T15:06:15","slug":"toolkit-time-capsule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/2019\/09\/toolkit-time-capsule","title":{"rendered":"Toolkit Time Capsule"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each of our student workers is given a cubby, a general collections lab manual and a basic toolkit that is theirs to use and maintain throughout their time in the lab.\u00a0 Before a new student starts working and when a current student leaves or graduates I will take the toolkit and evaluate all the contents to make sure they are all there and in good working order.\u00a0 Usually when a students graduates and moves on this includes\u00a0cleaning out years of scrap paper and debris.\u00a0 And often a complete scrubbing down is in order.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_5832.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2469\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_5832.jpg\" alt=\"Toolkit Time Capsule\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOver the summer I had several students graduate and leave us, so I had several kits to go through.\u00a0 When I was washing one of the older toolboxes I noticed some folded paper that was attached to the underside of a tray with masking tape.\u00a0 I immediately removed it, though it was already partially soaked with water.<a href=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_5841.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2468 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_5841-e1569595150389.jpg\" alt=\"Toolkit Time Capsule\" width=\"3024\" height=\"4032\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nUpon further inspection it appeared to be a collection of thoughts, quotations, poems, and a short story written on a piece of paper and a fragment of cloth.\u00a0 Some were written in ink, others in pen.\u00a0 I immediately texted the prior owner of the toolbox to see if they belonged to her, but she had no idea what I was talking about.\u00a0 My best guess is that these are several years old (the toolbox was in dire need of a good scrubbing), possibly dating back to before I was student supervisor and possibly before I even worked in the lab (i.e. 12 years or more).<br \/>\n<br \/>\nWhat a fun mystery to stumble across!\u00a0 Especially when the most exciting things I usually find when I clean out student toolkits are bent microspatulas, collections of abandoned endbands or ALL the pencils!<br \/>\n<strong>Jessica Ebert [UCL] &#8211;
