{"id":3061,"date":"2020-09-24T15:57:23","date_gmt":"2020-09-24T15:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/?p=3061"},"modified":"2020-09-24T15:57:23","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T15:57:23","slug":"enclosures-and-the-tux-box","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/2020\/09\/enclosures-and-the-tux-box","title":{"rendered":"Enclosures and the tux box"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When\u00a0in the course of\u00a0an\u00a0item\u2019s\u00a0history\u00a0it becomes clear that the book or artifact could use extra attention,\u00a0or just another element of design to aid in\u00a0its\u00a0care and preservation,\u00a0we create enclosures.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enclosures\u00a0create a microclimate\u00a0that\u00a0provides\u00a0a darker more consistent\u202fenvironment for works to be stored in. There are many types of enclosures used for many different reasons,\u00a0ranging from an\u00a0impermanent\u00a0simple\u202fpaper\u202fwrap\u00a0to\u202fmore\u202flong-term\u202fsolutions such as\u00a0cloth covered clamshells.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We use enclosures to provide a range of protection for their contents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A microclimate providing enhanced consistency concerning heat and humidity fluctuations.<\/li><li>A barrier against damaging UV rays.<\/li><li>Dust and pest control.<\/li><li>A strong support for contents.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because there is so much documentation done on customized\u202fhigh-end\u202fenclosures\u202fthat require greater skill and experience,\u202fsuch as cloth covered clamshells,\u00a0I will\u00a0discuss easy to make, low cost enclosures.\u202fTo\u00a0be honest, saving time and money is at the forefront\u202fof any business.\u00a0\u00a0Enter the elegant tux box.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"398\" height=\"298\" src=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/tux_box_001.jpg\" alt=\"Stack of completed tux boxes.\" class=\"wp-image-3062\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/tux_box_001.jpg 398w, https:\/\/libapps.libraries.uc.edu\/thepreservationlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/tux_box_001-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/><figcaption>Image from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/parkslibrarypreservation.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/07\/tux\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/parkslibrarypreservation.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/07\/tux<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tux box\u00a0serves\u00a0admirably\u00a0the\u00a0need for a cheap, easy first line of defense.\u202fWe usually create\u00a0tux\u00a0boxes using\u202f20-point\u202fBristol board with measurements custom to the book. The\u00a0tux\u00a0box\u00a0provides\u00a0an\u00a0adequate barrier against dust and light.\u202f\u00a0Another virtue of the\u00a0tux\u00a0box is that<s>\u00a0<\/s>old\u00a0books that have suffered degradation and have become brittle are\u00a0provided\u00a0a more stable structure for storage and handling.\u00a0It should be mentioned though\u00a0that\u00a0because of the nature of the\u202fdesign, temperature, humidity and some dust and light may enter inside the\u00a0tux\u00a0box\u202fthrough the exposed corners, possibly allowing these damaging elements inside.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So,\u00a0let\u2019s\u00a0make one.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First\u00a0make 3\u00a0jigs.\u00a0The jigs\u00a0will\u00a0provide a guide to\u00a0add\u00a0extra board thicknesses\u00a0to our\u00a0book box\u00a0dimensions\u00a0to account for\u00a0overlapping\u00a0our boards during folding. We\u00a0use\u00a020-point\u00a0Bristol board. With a pencil draw a light\u00a0\u201cv\u201d in the corner where the tab lays closed.\u00a0Open the tab and place 2 small holes with a\u00a0Japanese\u00a0hole punch or\u00a0an awl.\u00a0Cut 2 lines connecting the holes forming a slot. Fit tab into the slot to close.\u00a0Feel free to round the corners of the tab and all\u00a0flaps\u00a0using a\u00a0corner rounder.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div
