Jonathan Swift was an Anglo-Irish satirist. He is best known for such works as Gulliver’s Travels, A Modest Proposal, and A Tale of a Tub. Swift originally published all of his works under pseudonyms, such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, MB Drapier, or anonymously. He is a master of two styles of satire: the Horation and Juvenalian styles. Critics hail Gulliver’s Travels as a satiric reflection on the shortcomings of Enlightenment thought.
