John Toland was an Irish philosopher and occasional satirist who wrote numerous books and pamphlets on political philosophy and philosophy of religion, which are early expressions of the philosophy of the Enlightenment.  He was influenced by the philosophy of John Locke.

Notable works in ARB’s collection:

  • Nazarenus: or Jewish, gentile, and Mahometan Christianity (1718), 2nd edition
  • Letters to Serena (1704)
  • Amyntor: or a defence of Milton’s life, containing I. A general apology for all writings of that kind (1699), signed
