Almanacs

There are a number of almanacs in this collection.  Almanacs contained not only important dates, but other information that was of interest to immigrant communities.

The Farmers & Mechanics almanac, which was published in English to appeal to a wider audience, also included recipes and riddles.  Like many recipes of the day, the recipes in this 1874 almanac included ingredients but not instructions on putting the items together.  The recipes appear to have been designed for a crowd.  A recipe for fruit cake calls for 10 eggs, 1 pound of sugar, and 3 pounds of raisins.

Several volumes of the Germania Kalendar are included in the collection.  The Germania Kalendar included literature, poems and color drawings in addition to the normal almanac information.
