MS 17

Qur’an (19th century)

While green is the sacred color of Islam, blue also figures prominently in art and architecture.  As this example from an early 19th century Qur’an shows, blue interacts with gold in the borders to carry the exquisite artistry of the page and its calligraphy.  The importance of blue is that it functions as a protective color as well as acting as a symbol of heaven and paradise.
