Charley Harper on Display

Known for his colorful, minimalist views of nature, Cincinnati-artist Charley Harper produced not just paintings and prints, but he also contributed his art to numerous books and other publications.

Examples of this work can be seen in an exhibit on display in the Robert A. Deshon and Karl J. Schlachter Library for Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) through February.

The exhibit, “Charley Harper in Print,” highlights his work as an illustrator and authors of publications. The exhibit comprises:

  • original artwork by Charley Harper
  • prints and silk screens of his work
  • artist tools used by Charley Harper
  • toys and merchandise published by American Modern Books (AMMO) and beyond
  • published works written and illustrated by the artist
  • published works in which the artist contributed significantly as an illustrator
  • images of unpublished works and the artist himself
  • one example of Habitat Skateboard’s many skate desks adorned with one or more Charley Harper illustrations.

“Charley Harper in Print” accompanies the exhibit “Charley Harper: A Bird’s Eye View” currently showing in DAAP’s Reed Gallery through February 16. Beginning with his childhood and spanning his career, the exhibit is a retrospective of Harper’s works, many of them never seen before.

Both exhibits are free and open to the public. For hours and directions, visit the DAAP Library website at www.libraries.uc.edu/libraries/daap or the website for the Dorothy W. and C. Lawson Reed, Jr. Gallery at daap.uc.edu/galleries/reed_gallery.html.
