Learning is Fun in the CECH Library
Mixed materials, part of the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services (CECH) Library’s curriculum materials collection, are dynamic instructional materials, specifically curated to support a wide variety of PreK-12 curricula and learning environments. At the CECH Library, mixed materials include the following types of resources: Kits Games Models Puppets Manipulatives Picture and card sets Classroom instruments Posters, charts, and maps STEAM kits CECH curriculum materials are collected in support of pre-service and in-service teachers in PK-12 learning environments. We collect a wide range of curriculum materials in a variety of formats. UC in Print: Books Documenting 200 Years of the University of Cincinnati
In 2019, the University of Cincinnati celebrates its bicentennial anniversary with a year of events and programs. UC Libraries is marking the occasion with an exhibit “UC in Print: Books Documenting 200 Years of the University of Cincinnati.” Available for viewing on the fourth floor lobby of the Walter C. Langsam Library, the exhibit includes books from throughout the libraries and covers the history, notables, sports and culture of the university. Songs of the university, the architecture, football and basketball, even a children’s book starring the UC Bearcat can be found in the exhibit alongside writings from former UC presidents Raymond Walters, Walter Langsam and Joseph Steger. Exhibit Celebrates Leonard Bernstein at 100
Performer. Composer. Teacher. These three descriptions of world-renowned musician Leonard Bernstein, who was born 100 years ago this year, are celebrated in a new exhibit on display on the 4th floor lobby of the Walter C. Langsam Library now through the end of the calendar year. The exhibit includes biographical and professional information about Bernstein, recordings, books and images. It corresponds with a display in the Albino Gorno Memorial (CCM) Library of additional Bernstein materials and recordings. By Kevin Grace, University Archivist and Head of the Archives and Rare Books Library When Cincinnati businessman Enoch Carson began collecting the works of William Shakespeare in the years before the Civil War, he was part of a bibliophile craze that stretched across the Atlantic Ocean. During the 1800s in Europe and America, book lovers scavenged publishers’ catalogues, auctions and bookshops to amass their private libraries built on their specific interests. They corresponded with each other at length, trading prints and imprints and finagling to acquire their most desired items. For Carson, the quests were for Masonic books and for Shakespeare. Photo Documentation in the Preservation Lab
By Jessica Ebert, Conservation Technician in the Preservation Lab As the lead photographic documentation technician for the Preservation Lab, one of my primary responsibilities is creating visual representations of the conservation treatments performed, and housing created, in the Lab. This generally means capturing the condition of the object before treatment, anticipating how it will change once treatment is completed, and then capturing that transformation. We refer to this as before/after photography. The goal is to represent the object, with all its imperfections, accurately. Therefore, little modification is made to the captured before/after (and sometimes during) images. This allows the transition between the before image and its corresponding after image to…

It was on this same trip, more than 40 years ago, that he also became interested in Native American culture. This quickly developed into a passion for Native American children’s literature that his wife and fellow educator Laura grew to share. The University of Cincinnati Libraries Have Joined HathiTrust
The University of Cincinnati Libraries have joined HathiTrust, a partnership of major research institutions and libraries working to ensure that the cultural record is preserved and accessible long into the future by collaboratively collecting, organizing, preserving, communicating and sharing the record of human knowledge. UC Libraries joins more than 130 international research libraries in HathiTrust, and is the third Ohio library to join along with The Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University. “Membership in HathiTrust will enable the University of Cincinnati Libraries to partner with national and international collaborators with similar missions to preserve, protect and make accessible the scholarly record,” said Xuemao Wang, dean and university librarian.…
