    Rewarding Excellent Student Workers

    Student workers play a vital part in the daily operation of UC Libraries. From assisting users with checking out materials to trouble shooting technology problems to helping new students locate the stacks, student workers help the libraries to achieve our mission to “empower discovery, stimulate learning and inspire the creation of knowledge by connecting students, faculty, researchers and scholars to dynamic data, information and resources.” Annually, we recognize those student workers who perform their job at the highest level with the University of Cincinnati Library Student Award for Quality Service.     UC Libraries Welcomes the Newest Bearcats

    This summer, Langsam Library is a busy place as over 4,000 incoming students participating in UC’s New Student Orientation visit and learn about the spaces, places and people of UC Libraries. While in Langsam, they engage in activities designed to be both entertaining and informative about the various research resources, assistance and services they can utilize when they begin classes in the fall, including the Starbucks café currently under construction and scheduled to open in August. The students are participating in fun and interactive activities such as writing on the Information Chalkboard as they learn about how to find and evaluate research resources.     A Note from the Dean: A Busy Year in Review

    The 2014-15 academic year has been one of exploration, innovation and collaboration for UC Libraries. The launch of the Strategic Plan has contributed greatly to our success with its ten initiatives along with a wide range of events and activities created and sponsored by library faculty and staff throughout our libraries. The initiatives are all focused on the same goal, to make UC libraries the globally connected intellectual hub of the university. Below is a small sampling of those successes.     One of the four pillars of UC Libraries Strategic Plan is Space.     UC Libraries Recognized for Our Participation in LAUNCH Transition Program

    Lorna Newman, head of the Interlibrary Services and Access Department in Langsam Library, was recently presented with a plaque recognizing UC Libraries’ partnership with Sycamore High School and its LAUNCH program. The Launch Transition Program is housed on the campus of the University of Cincinnati and provides young adults aged 18-21 with an opportunity to be immersed in a community of same-aged peers. Launch participants work on the university campus and the surrounding Clifton area with an opportunity for multiple work placements towards developing vocational aptitudes. The goal is to help Launch participants gain self-advocacy, personal independence and problem-solving skills. Opportunities are provided for authentic application of academic skills. Sycamore…

    Exhibiting the Top Illustrated Children’s Books

    Schackleton’s Journey, Harlem Hellfighters, Poems by Haitian Schoolchildren and Time for Bed, Fred – these are just some of the books included in the new UC Libraries exhibit featuring the top illustrated books of 2014 as compiled by the New York Times Book Review. On display on the 4th floor of the Walter C. Langsam Library beginning December 4, the exhibit includes images from the top 10 illustrated books along with illustrations by the same artists from titles found in UC Libraries, including The Silver Donkey, Only a Witch Can Fly and Edwin Speaks Up, all available in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH) Library.
