Library Services Assistant, Science & Engineering Libraries
- 6-month full-time temporary position
- Start date ASAP
- Pay = $18/hour
The Library Services Assistant (LSA) provides operational support (both public and technical services) in the Science and Engineering Libraries unit. The LSA primarily supports the unit’s science libraries locations, Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library (GMP) and Chemistry-Biology Library (Chem-Bio). Responsibilities include staffing and overseeing the service desk at GMP and Chem-Bio during designated hours and providing operational support and assistance (e.g., technology support, reporting facility issues). At GMP, supports library services and materials processing, including responding to user questions and requests, maintaining reserves collections, processing new library materials and daily mail, and preparing requests for binding and preservation. Assists with the supervision of student assistants at GMP as needed for operational functions. Oversees maintenance of library collections at GMP, including shelf reading and inventory, space planning and shifting, and the assignment of student assistant tasks and projects as related to collections. Provides project support for library collections, including collections assessment and coordination with librarians for collection development efforts. Assists with the processing of special collections located in the science libraries.
Information Specialist, Science & Engineering (full-time 1-year position)

The Science & Engineering Information Specialist provides research and instructional programs for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) populations. The Specialist supports students, faculty, staff and other users through research consultations, teaching and workshops, collection development and assessment activities, and other projects and initiatives. This position liaises with designated STEM programs in both the College of Engineering and Applied Science and the College of Arts & Sciences. The Specialist works closely with a team of librarians, informationists and operational staff in the Science and Engineering Libraries and related units such as Research & Data Services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Liaises with designated disciplines and academic programs in the sciences, engineering and technology. Utilizes library and information science domain expertise and technological solutions to enhance library services, engagement and consultations, partnerships and innovations.
- Coordinates collection development activities for assigned areas, developing and implementing data-driven strategies for assessment of online subscriptions and print materials. Contributes to collection development initiatives and projects across the Science and Engineering Libraries and the wider UC Libraries organization.
- Plans and delivers instruction to faculty, students and other researchers. Collaborates with faculty to integrate scholarly resources into the curriculum and research activities. Assists with planning and instruction of Science and Engineering Libraries’ workshops.
- Takes a lead role as assigned on projects and initiatives related to special collections and archives in STEM, digital collections and exhibits, digitization, and physical exhibits.
- Provides outreach and consultation to STEM faculty and students on scholarly communications, institutional repository, digital projects and digital archives.
- Works with the Research and Data Services unit on services and projects supporting STEM user needs (e.g., data management, data visualization, GIS).
- Assists the Director in identifying, planning and cultivating partnerships between the SEL and CEAS/A&S.
- Serves on committees and other groups as related to responsibilities and in support of UC Libraries’ strategic interests.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in library/information science or relevant graduate education or a comparable combination of education and experience.
- Commitment to delivering high-quality service and pursuing new collaborations.
- Previous teaching experience, knowledge of instructional pedagogies, and an ability to develop and deliver responsive and forward-thinking instruction.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Professional experience in a STEM-focused library or academic research library.
- Undergraduate degree in a STEM field or extensive experiential background in a STEM discipline.
- Library collection development experience.
- Experience working with research data or other research outputs.
