A Year of New Beginnings… Welcome to the 2021-22 University of Cincinnati Libraries Annual Progress Report – a year that saw the broad return of students, faculty and staff to campus for fall semester. The transition from virtual to in-person was an extensive process as library spaces were re-evaluated to allow for a safe return to working and studying on campus. We welcomed students, faculty and staff back to campus with refreshed spaces, enhanced safety protocols for social distancing and a revived appreciation for working together in person. Library Spotlight: CCM Library
For over 70 years, the Albino Gorno Memorial Library has served the research and instructional needs of the students and faculty of the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) at the University of Cincinnati. The CCM Library was founded in 1949, built on the personal collection of Professor Albino Gorno, dean of the Cincinnati College of Music for over 40 years. Today, the CCM Library collections focus on materials that support CCM-related areas of music, musical theater, dance, and some aspects of theater and drama, while the Walter C. Kretschmers give to their UC passions By Julia Mace, UC Foundation Attend a Cincinnati Bearcats Women’s Basketball, Lacrosse or Volleyball game and that cheering you hear from the stands may likely be retired University of Cincinnati professors Laura and Richard Kretschmer. Loyal fans, the couple have been rooting for UC’s female student-athletes since the 1970s. This devotion doesn’t end with the season. Through philanthropic gifts, the Kretschmers support the college experience of student-athletes, knowing this will lead to bright futures. New digital display for 1911 graduate Valentine Barker
By Ivy O’Connell A collection donated to the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) Library is now a new digital exhibit. The Valentine Barker collection provides a snapshot of technical education and advertisement work in the early 20th century. The collection was recently digitized by the UC Libraries’ Digital Collections Team. Valentine Barker was a 1911 graduate of the Ohio Mechanics Institute comprehensive art program. The Ohio Mechanics Institute (OMI), founded in 1828, is one of CEAS’ source institutions and provided vital technical education during the early development of the city. Oesper Museum and Collections in the History of Chemistry as an American Chemical Society National Historic Chemical Landmark.
