An Interview with Mark Konecny, Scholarly Communications and Digital Publishing Strategist
In July, Mark Konecny joined UC Libraries in the newly created position of Scholarly Communications and Digital Publishing Strategist. Mark’s role will be to consult with students, faculty, and librarians on issues regarding fair use and copyright in research and in the classroom. A Librarian’s Journey to Cuba
Rosemary Franklin, librarian in the Reference and Instructional Services Department, traveled to Cuba July 8-17 as a participant in the program People-to-People, “A Revolutionary Perspective on Education.” Joining Rosemary was 17 librarians, K-12 teachers, university professors, and instructors from New Mexico, Florida, Ohio, and Washington, D.C. The participants brought together their collective experiences in education practice, policy making, and administration, along with health and medicine, library sciences, and community development as part of an effort to learn about Cuba’s educational practices and philosophy. New Position Brings Research and Collaboration Opportunities
On July 1, Jennifer Krivickas, head of the Robert A. Deshon and Karl J. Schlachter Library for Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), will join the Office of Research as the assistant vice president of integrated research. This new, shared position between the Office of Research and UC Libraries was created to align and integrate the research support activities provided by the Libraries and the recently developed arts, humanities and social science (AHSS) Third Century initiatives to advance UC’s emerging trans-disciplinary research goals. A Note from the Dean: An Update on UC Libraries’ Strategic Initiatives
Last May, the University of Cincinnati Libraries launched our Strategic Plan. Strategic plans are common in organizations today, both in the public and private sector. They set priorities, create a strategy and help companies identify a common direction to pursue. And while the thoughtful creation of a strategic plan is incredibly important, so is its implementation. For the first year of UC Libraries’ Strategic Plan we set ambitious goals, including last fall the launch of 10 strategic initiatives. A Note from the Dean: A Busy Year in Review
The 2014-15 academic year has been one of exploration, innovation and collaboration for UC Libraries. The launch of the Strategic Plan has contributed greatly to our success with its ten initiatives along with a wide range of events and activities created and sponsored by library faculty and staff throughout our libraries. UC Libraries Welcomes New Bearcats
This summer, Langsam Library is a busy place as over 4,000 incoming students participating in UC’s New Student Orientation visit and learn about the spaces, places and people of UC Libraries. While in Langsam, they engage in activities designed to be both entertaining and informative about the various research resources, assistance and services they can utilize when they begin classes in the fall. The students are participating in fun and interactive activities such as writing on the Information Chalkboard as they learn about how to find and evaluate resources. UC Libraries and IT@UC Contingent Participate in National CNI Annual Meeting
Six representatives from the University of Cincinnati Libraries and IT@UC participated in the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) annual membership meeting in Seattle, Washington on April 13-14, 2015. This is the largest UC contingent, and first to include multiple units presenting together, ever sent to this nationwide gathering of institutions working in “digital information technology for the advancement of scholarly communication and the enrichment of intellectual productivity.” The UC participants in the annual meeting were Nelson Vincent, vice president of information technology and CIO; Linda Newman, head of digital collections and repositories for UC Libraries; Ted Baldwin, director of the science and engineering libraries; Josette Riep, associate director of information…

Implementing the Strategic Plan
In May 2014, the University of Cincinnati Libraries launched our Strategic Plan. The plan defines our mission to “empower discovery, stimulate learning and inspire the creation of knowledge by connecting students, researchers and scholars to dynamic data, information and resources.” It announces bold objectives under four pillars of Digital Technologies & Innovation, People, Space and Data to Information to Knowledge.
