A final note from Dean Xuemao Wang
This summer, UC Libraries bids farewell to Dean Xuemao Wang as he leaves the university for Northwestern University. Wang has served as dean and university librarian at the University of Cincinnati since 2012. In 2019 he took on the additional title and responsibilities of vice provost of digital scholarship. During his tenure, Wang worked with library faculty and staff to raise the Libraries’ visibility regionally, nationally and internationally through the development of a Strategic Plan that focused on the four pillars of Digital Technologies and Innovation, People, Space, Data to Information to Knowledge. Lori Harris named interim dean and university librarian
Lori E. Harris has been named interim dean and university librarian of the University of Cincinnati Libraries effective July 1, 2022. Harris initially joined the Libraries in 2015 as an associate fellow from the National Institutes of Health/National Library of Medicine (NIH/NLM). She permanently joined the University of Cincinnati Libraries in 2016. Harris previously served as assistant dean and director of the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library and the Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions. More recently, she co-led the development of the Libraries’ strategic framework NEXT Directions, which outlines the Libraries’ Guiding Principles and Pathways to operational excellence with special emphasis on initiatives relating…

On July 1, Lori Harris began her tenure as interim dean and university librarian. As she embarks in this new role at the university, we thought this a perfect opportunity to ask her a few questions about her aspirations and hopes for the Libraries. P. Alfred Marchand – Trailblazer and Librarian
Leah Everitt, graduate research assistant in the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, recently presented information obtained from archival materials regarding P. Alfred Marchand, one of the first Black librarians in the Midwest and possibly the United States, having worked at Cincinnati Hospital from 1869-1918. It is difficult to say definitively if Marchand was the first Black librarian since he started working before the establishment of the American Library Association in 1876 or professional library programs in 1887. Edward C. Williams is cited as the first professionally trained Black librarian in the U.S., having obtained his degree in librarianship from New York State Library School in 1898. New digital display for 1911 graduate Valentine Barker
By Ivy O’Connell A collection donated to the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) Library is now a new digital exhibit. The Valentine Barker collection provides a snapshot of technical education and advertisement work in the early 20th century. The collection was recently digitized by the UC Libraries’ Digital Collections Team. Valentine Barker was a 1911 graduate of the Ohio Mechanics Institute comprehensive art program. The Ohio Mechanics Institute (OMI), founded in 1828, is one of CEAS’ source institutions and provided vital technical education during the early development of the city.
