UC Libraries Receives Two Grants from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine
The Greater Midwest Region Office of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) awarded the University of Cincinnati Libraries two grants that will promote good data and good health. The first grant received is a Research Data Award in support of UC’s 2019 Data Day event. Held annually, UC Data Day provides an opportunity to discuss and explore opportunities and challenges related to data, as well as to educate the research community on methods for driving discovery through data, a key area of interest for the National Library of Medicine. Join UC Libraries at Books by the Banks
On Saturday, October 20, the 12th annual Books by the Banks: Cincinnati USA Book Festival will take place downtown at Duke Energy Convention Center from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Once again, UC Libraries is an organizing partner of the literary event that allows readers to meet and greet favorite authors. The day-long festival will feature over 150 regional and national authors, book signings, author panels and activities for the entire family to enjoy. All events are free and open to the public. At the festival, attendees will have the opportunity to meet authors and to purchase signed copies of their books. The University of Cincinnati Libraries Have Joined HathiTrust
The University of Cincinnati Libraries have joined HathiTrust, a partnership of major research institutions and libraries working to ensure that the cultural record is preserved and accessible long into the future by collaboratively collecting, organizing, preserving, communicating and sharing the record of human knowledge. UC Libraries joins more than 130 international research libraries in HathiTrust, and is the third Ohio library to join along with The Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University. “Membership in HathiTrust will enable the University of Cincinnati Libraries to partner with national and international collaborators with similar missions to preserve, protect and make accessible the scholarly record,” said Xuemao Wang, dean and university librarian.…

Appointments Eira Tansey, digital archivist/records manager in the Archives and Rare Books Library, was appointed to the Society of American Archivists (SAA) Committee on Public Policy, a national committee that does the legwork behind virtually all SAA public policy statements and press releases regarding “record keeping issues in the news” – including recent statements on law enforcement body-camera footage, violations of FOIA and other matters of public record keeping interest. Preserving Taft
The mission of the Preservation Lab is to preserve and conserve the collections of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County and the University of Cincinnati Libraries – a collaboration begun in January 2012 to provide conservation and preservation treatments in an equally managed, staffed and equipped preservation lab on the University of Cincinnati’s campus. A recent collaboration with the Archives and Rare Books Library on a collection of letters and artifacts pertaining to William Howard Taft demonstrates the valuable role the Lab takes in both preserving a collection for posterity while also making it available for study today. A Note from the Dean: Adapting Libraries for the Future
How do we transform the Libraries’ traditional role from one of a service organization to that of a true partner in the academic pursuits of the university? Traditionally, libraries have been seen primarily as service units. Librarians and staff purchased and disseminated materials and assisted users with reference and other questions concerning the library. While this service role is important, in order for us to remain relevant – to not just survive, but to thrive – libraries need to move beyond that traditional service model into something that is more collaborative and integrated into the academic mission of the university. Digital Scholarship Center Awarded $900,000 Grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the University of Cincinnati a $900,000 grant in support of the Digital Scholarship Center’s research on machine learning and data visualization in multiple disciplines in the humanities and beyond. Located in the Walter C. Langsam Library, the Digital Scholarship Center (DSC) is a joint venture of UC Libraries and the College of Arts and Sciences.
